Do must have known his mother and as one book he probably had some kind of bond with his mom. His dad had to have been in the picture seeing as he knew the phrase "Transient Guests Are We" which we know was an important phrase his father spoke. His father probably was with him for a while, during his first some-odd years; teaching him to fight but only because he wanted to see how strong D could get. D's dad probably did kill his mom which set D out to kill him. So in other words, a hard childhood where the only real source of emotions that D felt or gave was with his mom.

well according to the novels his father used he as an experiment to to find a way pure blooded vampires can walk in daylight, and he hates his dad guts so it probably wasn't a good one.

I bet he was a heart breaker. To both girls and boys.

He was one of those quiet kids that no one talked to and was afraid of and that goth girls dreamed of.

If I remember correctly, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust showed D's mother is Countess Carmella's castle. The illusion said she loved his father.
Going back to the novels, the third volume, Demon Deathchase, there is no mention of going to the castle, as well as fighting the Countess. I'm not sure why the movie was so different from the book. Perhaps there were themes in it that was questionable, like how Leila is raped by her "brothers"?
I'm not saying that the movie was bad, quite the contrary, it was fantastic, but why deviate away from the actual story line? But it also showed us that D's mother didn't bare any ill will against his father, but perhaps what she said gives some clue as to why he wants to kill all vampires, and in the end, find his father and destroy him as well.
