FIRST AND FOREMOST!
Otaku (おたく or オタク) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests. It is particularly used for anime, manga, and video games.
Many Japanese people in Japan see an Otaku as a NEGATIVE factor! Matani Iyo, Asami and Tomiyama have expressed that this title of otaku is used to describe someone who,
"Is obsessed with Japanese anime and manga and spends all their money on it. They might have a job, and they might have a boyfriend or girlfriend however, it is not a positive thing at all."
You can however express yourself as an otaku by all means however, when you go to Japan it is probably in your best interest to hang off on introducing yourself as such in your introductions.
