EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Less than two weeks after putting a franchise tag on him, the New York Giants signed bruising halfback Brandon Jacobs to a four-year, $25 million contract on Wednesday.

The signing came less than two days before the start of the NFL free-agency period.

2008 Statistics
Carries: 219
Yards: 1,089
Touchdowns: 15
"Brandon is thrilled to continue his career with the New York Giants," Justin Schulman, his agent, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "This is the place he always wanted to be, and he will be here for the foreseeable future."

Jacobs, the 264-pound mainstay of the Giants' running attack the past two seasons, signed the deal on Wednesday after the two sides hammered out the agreement over the past week.

Jacobs ran for 1,089 yards and a team-leading 15 touchdowns last season in helping the Giants win the NFC East. He also combined with fellow halfback Derrick Ward (1,025 yards) to make the Giants only the fifth team with two 1,000-yard running backs.

Ward also became a free agent after last season.

Putting a franchise tag on Jacobs earlier this month guaranteed him a $6.6 million salary next season. If he had remained a free agent, the Giants could have matched any offer made by another team or allow him to sign with that team in exchange for two first-round draft picks

great move by the giants

Great move by the Giants. Not only is Brandon Jacobs my favorite current player, but he's also the center of the offense, and a huge part of the team. I'm really happy that they could sign him for a medium-term deal.

So now, the Giants are back and set with their power rushing attack. We'll probably lose Derrick Ward, but Bradshaw can be a very good #2 RB. Ware is also a pretty good option. We may draft a late-rounder for depth, too.

...This is just one move taken care of, by the Giants. Now, they will hopefully focus on what they'll do at the #1 WR spot. Also, they should focus on the future of their linebacker group, and possibly a SS or CB addition.

Good move, but will he be as effective since a)philly showed teams how to deal with him when they played in the playoffs b)without Derrick Ward?

Those will be the issues at hand.

Jacobs actually had about 100 yards in that game, on less than 20 carries. What killed them in that game was the offensive play calling, and the absence of Burress.

The Giants should be fine without Ward. They're better with him on the team, but they won't miss him too much. Ward was a good blocker and pass catcher, and was also an effective rusher. But the Giants still have Bradshaw to take on the #2 role, and they also have Ware. I also look for them to draft a late-round RB in the Draft.

It is easy to blame it on the playcalling when things are not working. But no matter what happened in that game, both defenses had an answer for everything that was is store for them. That game was not decided by the offenses, but by the defenses. Both defenses were banged up and missing a few pieces. So it was a pretty fair game. We both could at least agree it was definitely the best game of the postseason though. True?

I wouldn't agree. sweatdrop Maybe for the Eagles, but the Giants played like crap. Either of these teams should have been the favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, but I didn't think the game was a good as some other. I think that the Arizona-Philly game, the Tennessee-Baltimore game, and the Pittsburgh-Baltimore games were all better. The Colts-Chargers game was also good. And who could forget about the Super Bowl? razz
