Ellie picked up a small spade from the edge of the garden, where she kept all her tools under a tarp, since the shed she tried to build didn't work out too well.
The patch of dirt wasn't too big, but a fairly good size. It had a few rows of small plants growing in it, and other plants growing along the edge. Ellie had said she grew a few other things other than strawberries.

Ellie kneeled by the edge of the garden and started to dig around a plant. "See, Syvie, this is how we get the dandy-lions out. If we just try to pull them out, we might not get them all the way, and they'll grow right back in." she explained.

((I Wanted him to be able to do something useful and I don't think he'd be very strong as a baby))

Sylvester picked up another spade and followed Ellie's instructions. "Wow... For such a small plant, I didn't think the roots would be so long!" Sylvester said in a surprised tone. After digging the dandelion out, he saw how an innocent and pretty little weed could be so dangerous. It's roots could probably take most or all of the strawberry's water!, "Wow... this can't be too good for the strawberries..." Sylvester tossed the dandelion in a bucket he found.

"Yea, that's why they're such a problem." she said. She pulled some of the netting out of her pocket, it was black and seemed loosely knit. "Se, this is the netting 'Nica gave me, she said that since it's black it will let sunlight in. Not sure how that works, but she said it'll also keeps birds away. We'll just drape it over them, and that should keep them off." she said as she put the small piece of netting over the berries.
"Have you ever noticed how big the leaves of the plants get? That's because the bigger the plants' leaves are, the more surface area they have for getting the sunlight. " she said as she finished covering the small area with the netting.

"It does look like a spider web!" Sylvie exclaimed. It looked like a black and solid spider web. A web that could also prevent birds? "Black will let the sun in? I don't know what color has to do with sun..." Sylvester shook his head, who knew gardening can be confusing? "Wow... you sure know a lot about gardening Ellie! I wish I could know as much..." Sylvester sighed.

Ellie giggled. "I've been working with plants and stuff since I was as little as you. And 'Nica always had a bunch of books about gardening, so I learned from both books and experience. " She said as she dug up another dandelion. "I think the color of the netting kinda has to do with what colors reflect and which ones absorb. Science-y stuff." She smiled a bit. "I could help teach you how to maintain a garden, and we can make you your own little garden right next to mine! I can still get 'Nica's old books and show you them, if you want." She was really happy to have a friend who was as interested in gardening and things as she was.

"About the books... My reading skills aren't too good, "Sylvie hung his head, "No one had really ever taught me to read a lot, so the extent of my reading is the alphabet..." Sylvester sighed, "Though I would love to maintain a garden! It sounds fun!" Sylvester thought of all the delicious berries he could grow.

"Really? My own little garden? Next to yours?! That would be great!" Sylvie exclaimed. He would have a garden of his own?

Ellie grinned. "I can teach you to read too. I'm not as good as 'Nica, but I can read the big science words like photosynthesis, which is how the plants get food from the sun." She laughed. "Yep! Your own little garden. I can show you how to dig out all the rocks from the ground, and, just so many things! Sylvie, we'll be like best garden buddies!" she said, waving her arms in the air happily.

"Photo...what?" Sylvester was even more scared now that he knew there were big words to learn. But if he put his heart into it, it could probably be accomplished.

Sylvie laughed at the excited Ellie, "Garden Buddies forever!" Sylvie laughed flaying his arms in the air as well.

Ellie smiled at Sylvester. "Let's finish up here, we just gotta finish taking out the few weeds left and putting the netting up, then we can work on clearing up an area for you." Ellie said, digging out another weed. "It'll be lot's of hard work though, are you up to it?" She asked.

Sylvester was excited, "Okay!" He stabbed his spade into the ground and grabbed another dandelion and tossed it into the bucket, "Of course I'm up to my very own garden!" Sylvie chirped in enthusiasm.
