I originally play the alto saxophone and have recently decided to try to learn to play the clarinet too. Can you give me some pointers on the following stuff or just learning the clarinet in general? 1) should i ask my BD about learning or get one of my friends? 2)if i should ask my BD how should i bring it up?

Good choice biggrin Seriously, thouhg. Alto sax and clarinet are almost identical in terms of fingerings. I became first chaor alto when I taught myself last year. It wa spretty easy. 1) it depends. If you want to play it next year, this year or soemthing to the like school-wise, then yes, you should tell your BD, and check to make sure it is okay and that your BD knows. 2) Ask your BD outside of class, such as in a visit afterschool, whle waiting for the bell to ring, etc. They will be more likely to listen when it isn't during class. You should also give them some time to make up their mind.BDs are busy; they need soem time to make decisions like that.
If you just plan on learning to brag nas say you play a differne tinstrument, then you should just ask a friend. If you plan on playing for school, talk to your BD.

Agreed. If ur switching from playing a sax in band class 2 a clarinet in ur band class then ur BD will eventually have 2 be told. If ur just learning for fun (well not 4 class i mean, music is always fun! 3nodding ) then u could ask a friend OR ur BD. A friend would most likely be more comfortable and would know how 2 teach 2 ur preference. But they may teach u badly. By badly I mean that if u pick up a bad habit in fingering then its a lot harder 2 get rid of it once U've gotten used 2 doing it. Asking ur BD would help u learn faster if u want 2 become good quickly enough for something. Thankfully a saxaphone and clarinet are the most similar basic instruments 2 eachother. U know how 2 use a reed and watnot.

the embouchure is not really the same.. trust me i'm an oboe/clarinet player who's had some experience with sax. for me sax mouth was like whoa! big! so i'm betting clarinet mouth to you is gonna be like whoa! small! but trust me... clarinet is sooo much fun! and a little lighter... i hope you have fun with it and just pm if you need questions answered or have fingering/trilling/playing issues. 3nodding
