This is bryopsis, (not in my tank):

Anywho, my tank is completely overrrun by the stuff. I can't figure out what's causing it to grow... I do weekly 5 gallon water changes, run a phosphate removing media ( PO4 was zero last time I checked), and make sure my tank has enough flow. I've been dosing PurpleUp trying to fight it back with coralline algae growth, but that doesn't seem to be helping much. I also have three large emerald crabs that do a pretty good job keeping it trimmed back, but it's still spreading in some areas. I'm at the end of my line.

HELP?

Edit: Got a sea hare and it seems to be taking care of the problem, but any other suggestions are welcome!

do you use rodi water or something else that was heavily filtered for water changes?

I use buffered RO/DI water to do water changes.

I've heard that buffering your Mg levels up to about 1600 significantly slows down bryopsis growth. I just started to supplement Tech M, and I'll give you updates on how it's working out.

Starting Mg levels were 1300, added one dose of Tech M the other night. I'll test again tomorrow to see how things are going.

Oh, and I tested everything else, and it turned out OK.

Salinity: 1.025
pH: 8.3 (Finally right! heart )
KH: 14
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: below 10
PO4: Not detectable
Iodine: (Who knows? Does anyone here actually test for iodine?)

they say iodine is necessary
they say iodine is BS
i dotn know D: we dotn test for it and our reef is perfectly fine

anyway
rodi water for top off doesnt need to be buffered...we found that out after asking MANY people cuz we had some issues >_<
saltwater for make up doesnt need anything added to it besides salt because the salt adds all your trace elements magnisum calcium ect anyway...again....asked MANY people who did all kinds of research and experiments on salt

any supplements you add and even your sea salt has the ability to cause unwanted algae growth
anything that can be considered a nutrient in any way shape or form causes some kind of algae D: i know...sad isnt it?

and you dont want your mg to be too high because that affects your calcium and then that affects your corals ability to grow (dont know what you are keeping >_<) but just keep it at its normal range

many people have told me
your parameters could be PERFECT and you will STILL have some kind of algae. the best way to get rid of it i to either buy an algae blenny or some hermit crabs...thats what we did

you should go to a website called G.A.R.F and buy their clean up grew package...its is WONDERFUL
best thing you could buy for your tank D: or their grunge...GREAT results :3

also read articles by this chemist
he is awesome and knows what he is talking about

another thing you could do besides not adding anything extra to your saltwater for water changes is have less light on your tank even by an hour. the algae wont have as much light and wont grow as tall so that maybe a clean up crew could in fact clean it

OR

you could attach a refugeium with macro algae. the macro algae will eat up all the nutrients the nuisance algae needs to grow. the macro algae will also eat up any extra nutrients in the water

we have the garf clean up crew, we added garf grunge, we dont add anything but salt to our water change water and we add NOTHING to top off water and we have a refugium
we have almost no algae even though there are occassional small clumps that crop up here and there because in a home aquarium its just difficult to have it ALL gone ALL the time
