I can only speak for myself, I am level 40 about 2/15/14 and so far thats been good to me, and i only dipped into holy for the "seals of the pure" and ret for the "persuit of justice" and "improved judgements" and so i personally plan to be 5/52/14 in the end.
And that is my 2 cents for the day.

Honestly staying ret would be your best bet until you reach 80 then decide if you want to tank heal or dps...ret you can level quicker.

Ret can kill things in a few shots, most fights don't last more than a few seconds. Failed a few quests by killing things too fast. -.-;
As for Prot, I leveled 10-80 as prot and loved every second of it. Seal of Light and then gather up 10 mobs with blessing of sanc on and you're golden. Prot can kill 10 things in the same amount of time as it takes them to kill 1 mob.
If you want to instance grind, holy is probably the way to go. Holy is also able to AoE large packs of mobs just by using consecrate and using flash of light on themselves.
Personally, I've raided and done instances as all three specs of paladin. I have the most fun at the end of the day with prot, its really the only challenge in the game I feel. Ret is just pressing a few buttons to whack crap, and holy just plays whack-a-mole with health bars. Prot gets into people's faces and giggles as something tries to kill them.

Just saying.. go prot. Best of both worlds, unless you have 10k G to Dual-Spec, in which case go Holy and Ret. 3nodding

If you want to last long in a fight go Prot but whatever spec you go at lvl 80 you probably want to go Holy so you can never die! but for lvling i would say prot

a warning though, ret is taking the nerf stick hard in 3.2, though it is still the best lvling spec. DONT STAY RET AT 80. besides, every class can dps, and there are even pure dps classes. go prot for the easiest tanking class ever, or holy so you will always be wanted in raids.

Bewitch76065 Honestly staying ret would be your best bet until you reach 80 then decide if you want to tank heal or dps...ret you can level quicker. I got a paladin from 1 - 80 faster then any other character I've leveled, fully prot.

Ret is boring and slow until you get your 51 point talent. Prot will be your best bet. You'll kill stuff a tad slower, but you can kill multiple things at once, which makes it faster. Prot only gets better once you're in NR.
If you want to be holy, just collect gear and save the talent switch for when you're 80. Tinker with it if you like closer to 80, but it's not going to reach its full potential till you're higher up. Supposedly in 3.2 Holy pallies are godly or some crap. I don't know the details, my paladin's not my main anymore.

Why don't some people get it how to play a paladin?
I was in a group to BRD earlier tonight on my own paladin, and the group leader, another paladin, asked who was going to tank. At first, i said he should tank because he was a higher level, assuming he was also retribution. At the summoning stone, I checked his specc and he's full protection, so when he again asks who is tank, I say again that he should tank since he is protection this time. When he doesn't have a shield I should've began to worry, but hey, it's a low level instance, we can always try. After asking him three times to put on Righteous Fury (THE paladin threat maker) everyone still gets aggro except for him. After the rest of the group has started complaining I take over the tanking (with a shield and fury ofc) and after two groups without anyone getting unnecessary aggro the other paladin left.
I can only assume he went to sit in a corner and cry because he failed at life.

a lot of people who play this game are very young. paladins appeal to the young and most people set up their newb friends/family with paladins because it's basically auto attack and press one to four buttons the entire span of leveling

If you can get good gear for it and invest a bit of money, prot AoE leveling is amazing. Rested level 52-53 I did in 1 hour 10 minutes played time just doing AoE pulls. Much more fun than just killing 1 mob at a time.
