Birds of a feather flock together, at least that is what the elders always agreed. The Den is a physical manifestation of that concept. You may not believe this from what you see in the Villa corridors, but Oculai of a different mask are almost never found under the shade of the same tree for longer than a passing glance. So even as our companions mingle with us on the surface, there is an underlying urge to scuttle away to comfort of like ideals and needs. Thus each order has been provided with a den on the Villa grounds.
