I made a decision today to try out yoga to help me get more tone and de-stressed. Though I would make a thread for anyone who is already doing yoga to give me some suggestions.
I've found a few videos for beginners and I bought a mat today, and so far I've managed to realize I'm very inflexible.

Just don't push it---if it hurts, back off a little. You'll get more flexible. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. Don't overdo the stretches, and don't give up! You can kick it up a notch later, if you want to. After several years of basic yoga practice, I delivered my first child with no classes and no drugs. Also freaked out a nurse running a stress test on me when I lowered my heart rate on the treadmill. blaugh Yoga will serve you well. Namaste.

What form of yoga are you practicing?

Yeah, totally take it easy. Everyone advances at difference paces and some poses might take years and others days. A friend of mine nailed crow within a year and it took me about 2 to somewhat get it.

I love yoga so much! I've been bad at not doing it as often anymore and I notice my body is not happy about it. I think I want to take up actual classes again when we move into a house.

Yeah, my body complains bitterly if I skip yoga for more than a day or two.
I should probably start taking actual classes again instead of just practicing at home, but I got kinda scared off last time when I wound up bursting into tears in the middle of class... gonk

My yoga teacher would tell us that could happen, but I never saw it. But that's what yoga's all about, releasing all that tension and emotions and the stuff that's not good for us.

Congratulations!

I bought a bunch of yoga videos and a mat a while back. At first I'd just do a bit and eventually got frustrated with myself. (My body started to feel worse, but just recently I found out that I can't deal with the nightshade family and in removing nightshades everything got sorted out.)

I've started doing yoga at home again. I love it. I love how I feel very airy and stretched. I tend to yawn like there's no tomorrow though. (Like every breath would be a yawn.)

So far, I only have this video, but I find it pretty challenging. For the first time last week I did an entire section all in one go. (Downside to the DVD is that there's no chapters, so you've basically got a VHS that doesn't need rewinding.)

Yoga is awesome to de-stress. I recommend combining it with a daily meditation. It does wonders for relaxation and self control.

I did yoga in college, but the teacher was kinna crazy...

I like it for the fitness and health aspect, but she was more into it in the religious aspect. I think it's a matter of finding the right teacher for you. If I could, I would be very interested in doing it again. It's kind of expensive though, and I have other priorities right now.

I am very interested in finding a de-stress routine and several friends have been telling me about yoga. I plan on following them to the class next Tuesday. =]

I have a few questions, however, that they weren't able to answer being beginners as well. I've heard that yoga puts you in great shape. Is this a rumor or a fact? And what videos would you recommend? I would like to get some in order to practice in the dorm room; the class is only two nights a week (Tuesday and Thursday) and I have a lab on Thursday. Any suggestions?

You're probably not going to get ripped from yoga. But yoga can help you gain some strength and balance. It can help you reduce stress, stay limber, and reach or stay at a healthy body weight. So it certainly is good for you, even if the results are not immediate or obvious.

I'd recommend checking out your college library, your local library, Netfix, or a health channel until you find something that works for you. Some videos are more about breathing, others about balance, others about stretching, others about almost impossible positions! So it really depends on what you want to focus on.

Personally, videos don't really do it for me. I have a hard time finding videos that match both my speed and interest. So I tend to get lazy and skip a lot of poses when I watch videos. I find yoga classes to be a lot more beneficial, especially if you have a friend with you or are in a small enough class that the teacher can give some amount of one on one.

Wow, I wish I could find some cheap or free yoga classes. I'd love to try yoga, but I don't have the patience for the videos, and I can't afford classes nor would I probably be able to keep up with a class. I'm very slow at those kinds of things.
