I've been trying to get more involved with my writing, you know to pull myself out of the weird depression swings. Usually when I focus on one thing and force myself to meticulously work at it, my depression gets booted out of the way.
Anyway, I was thinking about my style of writing. I always seem to add a little TOO much detail. Like when I know a back story to a random thing (encounter, person, etc) I tend to shed a little light on it. Sure it fills out my writing a little, but have you ever found such "filling" to be annoying?
My main question is this: When is "filling in" a bad thing?

It depends on the point you're trying to make. If it seems to be a little too long, or you drift too far off topic before you end your story/poem, it's usually a little too much. But, I do it often too. The only thing I can tell you is reread everything and see what doesn't fit. I don't even if know if I know what I'm talking about though lol. Just trying to help.
Love and Peace,
Vince

Yay Vince it's good to see you again! I do hope you get involved with the Contest of the Month!
I know what you mean. My problem is though if I go back and reread, I start noticing things I don't like then change them. Then I go back and read again only to hate the changes. It gets to the point I say "Forget it" and just post whatever I have.

I think it's more that we critique ourselves too much. We are too critical of our own work. Because I know I do it too, I want it to be perfect and something always seems out of place.
Your best bet would be to find someone close to you and have them read it and tell you, honestly, what is good and what needs to change. The only problem with that being is if they are literate enough to do so lol.
And thanks for the welcome. I've missed everyone.

Yeah, but then you get the problem of finding some to critique that has time and won't forget. I've tried to get my fiance to read my work and he's extremely literate. He'll glance over it and say it's good. But I feel like I can't trust him on my writing. I mean, for some reason there has to be something wrong.
That's one reason I made the guild. One of the future contests will be an editing contest. I will take excerpts from various stories in the guild and the first person to critique it gets a point. blah blah blah READ STORIES.
yup. That way we get editing practice and people get advice on stories.

Lol my fiance loves to critique mine. She can always find a way to one-up me, and I enjoy it. Friendly competition. Although she has trouble with it, she is the artisitic one, and I write so we even each other out lol.
That is a really good idea though. Would be a fun contest to be sure. Hope I'm here for that one.
Hopefully I can promote some while I'm on. I've been reading and writing a few stories, so hopefully the word will get out.

Yay for promotions!
I think I'll have it next month for March. Yeah I think I will.
I had a friend once who critiqued for me, and I for him, but we both became busy in college and we haven't been able to get together much. So my last resort is just posting them to see what people think.
I think I'll go haunt the writing forums again until we get some more active members.

I have a few threads with old friends, and I'll see if I can get someone to join. I know they will be active lol.
Oh and by the way, in the crew section is an explanation for my abscence if you have not already seen it.

I read your explanation no worries! And I replied to it!
I'll be banning people that haven't even posted once I attempt to contact them.

It can be hard to get out of a depression swing, writer's block, whatever. I find myself in one now. Too much detail I would think would be writing every finger twitch or what they had for breakfast three weeks ago last Thursday. It is good to know a character's back story or in the case of a Fan Fiction crossover, how the worlds happened to collide.
