do you live in Illinois? IMEA as in Illinois Music Educators Association?
I *almost* made IMEA state jazz band when I was a senior. I was still in the top jazz band in my region. I still have the CD of that concert. That was in 2006.
I think the audition piece in 2006 was 'The J-Bird Rides Again". Everyone in my jazz class at schoo hated it at first, but it really grew on us.
I do remember being asked after my jazz audition if I was auditioning for the concert band. I told the judge 'no, jazz is really my thing." and he replied back "Well, the concert band needs more trumpets like you."
7 people from my jazz class made the top band, counting me. 1 alto sax (she ultimatley went to state), 1 tenor sax, 1 bass trombone, 1 tenor trombone, myself on trumpet, 1 guitar, and our bassist. My school basically ran that group. It was great.
Not to blow my own horn or anything... (I guess this proves that trumpet players are full of themselves)
Just practice, practice, practice and you'll be OK.

I am in Florida, so ours is FMEA Allstate. (Florida Music Educators Association).
It was really fun this year. I am in the choir, and we sang a really good song called 'When I Think Of You'. Then again, we did a horrible song called 'When The Swallows Arrive'. I swear, that song was horrible.
I guess my horror story is more of a social thing. I was in the room, minding my own buisness. My roommates were outside hanging out with the other kids from our school (It's an art school). So I walk out, because I was annoyed by their volume level. I see all the guys just sitting there, petrified while the girls are forcing them into Spin The Bottle. I walk past them, and the girls call me over, and the guys all say "Save yourself." I'm like whatever, I'm resting my voice. Well, as I walk in, they grab my legs and hold onto me, telling me not to go (this was the girls).
Only other thing was when one of the guys wore my crinoline because he thought it was pretty.... *smacks hand against forhead*
