What features should it have? I am getting an Intermediate model. I've already decided that I need a B-Foot. Should it have the gizme key? confused

I should be getting a new one soon too! I'm so excited! My dad said that he wants me to trade in my old one for the new one, though. And he thought that I was being all dramatic when I almost started crying at the thought of getting rid of my first flute!

I've been looking around for a new one as well. My parents also want me to sell my old one, but I'm not as willing because I really don't want to treat a new flute to a harsh marching season. As for features, I want a B foot and an inline G (maybe).

I would do more research on the gizmo key, because it might not be something you need, and it will probably add more money.

I want to get a Alto Flute soooo badly!! I found one, a Gemienhardt, with the curved headjoint[without the straight] for $900!. It has to be the cheapest Alto I found. [I'm gonna ask my dad if he can put my report card money into buying it..Instruments are more important than new glasses that I don't need... Right..??]

Yes on gizmo. It should come on all B foots. The gizmo makes the high C sound so much better from a tone and intonation standpoint. It closes the low B key only when you press the gizmo. For the inline G, only if your fingers can reach it, because I am assuming you are getting open hole. You won't be able to cover the holes all the way or at all if you can't reach. It's also based on comfort. If you don't like twisting your hand all the way to reach it, don't get inline. I personally prefer the inline G, but that's only because I can reach it and I find comfortable. When you get your open hole flute, make sure to get plugs! Plastic ones are usually about a dollar. Take them out one or two at a time (unless you are a quick learner; Then you can do more) and work on getting used to covering those holes. When you master playing without those plugs, take more out. Most difficult holes to cover completely are F# and G. Good luck!

I love the alto flute!!! I'd take an alto flute over new glasses any day! I can't even see out of mine. But I really do need a car... and my parents just bought me a really expensive flute.

I just got done shopping for a new flute and I will share a few tips for you that should make shopping a little easier. Make sure you set a price range, because flutes can get pretty expensive. If you can, try different brands of flutes(and different models) so you have an idea of what you want. Decide if you want a silver plated flute, solid sterling silver headjoint with a silver plated flute, solid silver flute, or a solid silver flute with a gold lip plate. This will help you in your decision. I hope this helps. smile

By the way, I ended up buying an Armstrong 300B. She is solid sterling silver and has a gold lip plating. I purchased her from Woodwind and Brasswind.

i say yes to gizmo key. it makes any note above high C much easier and better sounding. B-foot is almost a standard on high quality flutes. inline or not, really doesnt matter (i dont like inline). and one other thing, some people like the french arches, i honestly couldnt care for them.
i got a "Powell, Sonare" a couple of years ago. it works perfect for me, and for those who know much about brands, Powell is top of the line (i actually think the Sonare line is the cheapest they sell), but then again, i heard tell of another individual who did not like the Sonare at all, so i guess it is probably all personal opinion.
if there is one thing you SHOULD do, it is go to the store (like Groth or Schmidtt) and compare the models you want before you make a purchase!
hope that is at least marginally helpful.

Sonare is actually not a Powell flute, but it has a Powell head joint. I have seen many of them, and they seem like nice upper level intermediate flutes. Speaking of Powell... I have one! It's the really expensive one that my parents just got me a little while ago. I love it to death, and I'm really fortunate to have it because I needed a flute for college and we didn't have $9,000 to shell out. Luckily, my flute teacher was selling the Powell that she bought from my first flute teacher at a very reasonable price.
