has this happened to anyone? For as long as I can remember I've loved music, and I've (not to brag) always been really good at it too. But lately it feels as if the spark I had in me is going out. Ever since the beginning of this year its just been getting less and less and I've been feeling more and more insecure about my playing and my playings been getting timider and timider. This year for me should have been the best year for me musically yet! I'm in the top band at my school (which btw usually wins or places very high in superstate), the youngest in my section, and I'm in our schools orchestra where only select people get in. Maybe we've been playing our music for too long and I just want new material, and I just need something new to listen too or something to think about? I don't know whats wrong with me! Whenever I played something I'd always leave band or orchestra happy or really moved with how musically the piece was played and I felt as if I always improved in one way or another however small it was. This year I play everything normally, but when we play something thats musical I don't feel moved anymore. I used to dump all of my emotion into playing, and now I hardly feel anything! I used to listen to all of these major orchestras play, and imagine what I could do to make it my own, and more amazing. I don't know why I've had this sudden change when my love for music should just grow even more.
I also just feel like all year I havn't been getting better, I've either just stayed at the same level I was at, or feel like I've gotten worse. The weird thing is I'm practicing more than last year, and the music isn't that hard.
Please help! music is all I have in my life, and its making me depressed loosing it. Not like suicidal, it just feels like life is so much more plain and boring with out it. Its like taking color out of a painting. Life is just black and white for me now without it.

This happened to me last year. I was in the top band at my school, except I was the only to be in it two years. It was my second year. None of the music seemed interesting. I rarely learned something I hadn't the year before. I was utterly bored, and stopped practicing as much.
What I did was I went to a music store and found some fun usic, in my case a book of disney solos. Whenever I would get bored while practicing, I would play the disney songs. They were a bit harder then my school pieces, and definately more fun. I found I was more excited to practice and learn the new disney songs, and we ended up doing a disney song in band. It contained some more songs, and it was really fun for us all.
So, find something fun and practice it everytime you practice. At school, just think about playing it while you play.
I hope this helps!

while i've never felt this before, i could suggest something...
try looking up something (a solo maybe) that just seems a little too hard for you, something really challenging. if that doesn't work, think about some bands that you like and try to play the vocal, guitar, or whatever part on whatever instrument you play.

I've never had this happen to me either, but one of my fellow band mates did last year. He looked up mario sheet page music and started to like band soooo much more. Maybe you could look into some of the songs you like, it might make you more interested in band if you can play the songs that you like to hear. biggrin

Get something ridiculously hard and play that, once you master it you'll feel real accomplished, and you get that feelin' back once again biggrin

Thats what I'm doing right now actually, I'm trying to play Sonata right now XD. I can hardly even play the first nine measures correctly, but I haven't felt this determined with my music since middle school!
