I rebooted my computer so everything was erased I was 100% sure I had all my files on my flashdrive and when I checked I didn't. I only had shortcuts to the file which made it look like I had the files on my drive before I rebooted but it's empty after. Luckily the Pictures are in but my Documents are not. ;__;

Also, I'm ground. Only half an hour of computer time that's not homework-related. I only have 5 minutes left. I'll reply tomorrow.

Well, all hope might not be lost... generally with a format, unless it's a nice low-level (takes HOURS *just* to do it) format (eg. fills the entire HD with 0's... and even then), you still have a chance of recovering your files.

Now, there's a number of ways to do this, but I would highly recommend the use of a linux live-cd (or windows, if you can legally get one... *cough*), which will let you boot your compy up, and you can save your files with it (it has to already have the appropriate software on said cd, but if you google it, shouldn't be hard to find).

Save 'em to your flash drive (or external hard drive), and you're done.

If for some reason you can't do that, then google up some freeware file recovery software... there's plenty out there. Run it, and save the files you can recover/you want, to your flash drive.

Now... it's not guaranteed, especially since the hard drive has been used since the format, I presume, and even if it hasn't... let's just say that file recovery isn't a guaranteeable thing... but the odds are good IF you haven't saved much to the formatted hard drive. o.o

Oh, and I dun think I said this, but if you can help it, do NOT save the recovered files to the hard drive that you're recovering them from. It can do really weird things. Recover it to a different hard drive (or external hard drive, or flash drive), and then after you've recovered everything you want, you can put it back if you wish. It should mention this in whatever software you use... but I just want to say it.

er... and one more thing... it DOES take time for this to work... it's got to scan your compy rather than relying on a list of where all the files are (normally, your OS has a list of where everything is on the hard drive... but when it's formatted, that goes poof... so it takes time to look over the entire hard drive for your data...)... and it can easily take over the half-hour you have allotted... but, that's something I guess that you'll have to discuss with your parents...

Anyways... good luck? ^_^( )

Thanks for all this info. I'll try to remember it for when I need it.

There wasn't much in my Documents. Just some old projects, dream logs, and fan fiction. I wasn't working on any of them but the only thing I do want back are my dream logs. I have this idea where I'll go deeper into them and possibly print them into a neat book. I could always re-write them ... slowly.

I've never switched computers and kept all my stuff because s**t happens.
Like right now I have all my stuff on my old laptop except we lost part of the cord when we moved so I can't turn it on to get it. If anyone knows of a website with a do or don't list that's primarily based on the person's weirass taste, linkpls?

I wiped my old computer several times, never did it to this one. :<

But what I have more problems with is corrupting flash drives than I do corrupting computer files. I have lost many an old paper by having the flash drive go "whut".
