It had been a long, hard day of looking after her children, feeding and washing them, and keeping them out of trouble. They'd been running around everywhere, and to keep her emerald eyes on each one of them at all times was a task indeed, and a remarkably difficult one at that. Six Cubs - something experienced mothers struggled with, let alone first time mothers like Azi. But...she was coping. And they were healthy, happy cubs, and to see them running around, giggling gleefully made her smile. It actually made her think that maybe she was doing something right.
Collapsing onto her side, Azriell gave a heavy sigh. They were all asleep now, with full bellies from a particularly tasty wildebeest she'd caught. Asleep at the very back of the den, snuggling up against her back, seeing as she was facing the front of the den. She enjoyed sleeping with her children - she expected they found the solid mass of warmth that was her body comforting. And the strange thing was, she found that having each of their scraggy little bodies breathing against hers, fidgeting about in their sleep...well. She found that oddly comforting too.

Feana opened her skyblue eyes, the memories of the day's events flooding back quietly. She had played with her siblings (including a quite crafty trick on one of her brothers that had left the poor boy covered in leaves and what could be assumed to be honey), had a delicious dinner and finally a nice nap near Mom. Normally, that's all that could be asked for but perhaps it was her inquistive nature that sensed something was different.
It may have been the stray shower or the odd colored rabbit she had chased a few days ago but something seemed different to her. Stretching out her paws against the dusty earth, she yawned before looking over at her Mother (between the paws and fur of her many siblings). Mom seemed different, but perhaps having 6 cubs at once did that to a lion....she wasn't sure. She just sort of stared quietly at her parent, not 100% sure if she was sleeping or awake.

Azi grumbled a little, shuffling around in her sleep. It seemed insomnia was affecting her tonight, and that irritated her to no end. She was tired, and she knew she was tired, but her body seemed unwilling to give into this clear need. Trying to cause as little disruption as possible so as to avoid waking her cubs, Azi turned around in her sleep, so she was facing her cubs instead. Maybe seeing their cute little faces would lull her to sleep...
Except there was one, bright blue pair of eyes staring back at her. Frowning a little, Azi used one paw to prop herself up on her side, watching the cub with curiosity. In the darkness, she couldn't see exactly who it was - the twins had blue eyes, as did Feana, so telling who it was was impossible in the blackness that currently enveloped them. "Amanzi?" she guessed, carefully pushing herself to her feet, moving away from the cubs and towards the mouth of the den, where there was more light.
"Come outside, dear."

Feana heard her mother call out one of her siblings names and though she shook her head, the voice moved and called back at her in the light. She yawned, following the clear voice towards the den's entrance as she walked. Once within the beams of the light outside, she turned to her mother again, cocking her head quietly.
For it was late, but this night the younger cub couldn't sleep...thoughts kept clouding her head. Was it the joy of getting older and bigger, the curiousity about the world around her, or another more dreadful thought. For Feana, being here with her mother was a grand moment, one she hadn't had before and as such, it was something to be treasured.
"Yes Mother?" she replied politely, hoping she wasn't to be punished for her trick on her sibling earlier in the day.

Ah, she had been wrong. It was Feana, not one of the twins. A wide smile beamed down at the juvenile, Azriell lowering her face to nuzzle the top of her daughter's head fondly with her nose. They were growing up so fast. It seemed like just yesterday they'd been wriggling, mewing bundles of fur clambering over each other to feed on her milk. And now here they were, well on their way to adulthood.
"Sorry, Feana. I only saw the blue eyes, so it could've been you or the twins."
She smiled warmly, and as she looked down on her daughter her chest swelled with pride. For a single mother...she hadn't done too badly. Her cubs were alright - they were all growing up grandly. "Can't you sleep, dear?"
A hint of worry crept into her voice, Azriell using a paw to pull Feana a little closer.

No, sleep seemed impossible, and insomnia seemed to be genetic in this family. Despite the fullness of her belly and the heaviness of her eyelids, the little lioness nuzzled into her mother with a sleepy noise. "I want to sleep, but, I'm awake." Her voice almost came out in a whine as she huffed softly, baby cheeks, already round with baby fat, getting rounder with the huff, chest puffing out before she laid down against her mother.
She loved her siblings, her mother and the pride. Her life here could be good, pulling pranks, teasing her siblings. But something was going on in her little mind that wouldn't let her sleep.
"Mother, do you know what it's like outside the Pridelands? Do you know any other lions that aren't in the pride?" Her curious mind couldn't filter those questions. The gray and pink bundle of inquisitiveness turned upside down to paw at her mother's chin as best as she could, wanting to brush her toes against her. She was lucky her mother didn't scold her to harshly for the honey and leaves prank she pulled on one of her brothers. Would she bring it back now?
