For a number of years I studied the revoloutionary war and that time period. I was wondering if anyone knew any cool facts about any of the battles that took place. I really like learning about wars of the past and I was hoping to learn somthing here.

I'll have to look to see who it was as I forget. I have the book the story is told in.

During a temporary unoffical truce a wealthy American man challenged a British Captain to a game of chicken so to speak. They were to sit on barrels that were claimed to be loaded with explosives. A fuse would be lit and the last one remaining on the barrels wins.

The British Captain agreed to this and the game was started. As the fuse inched closer to the barrel the Captain began to squirm and became frightened. When he looked over he saw his opponent sitting there smoking his pipe. Eventually it became too much and the Captain jumped off and ran away.

It turns out the "explosives" in the barrel were nothing more than onion peels.

Most people have heard that Von Steben and Lafayette helped turn the Continental Army into a real fighting force with the introduction of things like drills and latrines, but most people don't know that Tadeusz Kościuszko did much the same for the US cavalry. History has buried him because gay and polish isn't nearly as romantic as the image of the stern German and the handsome young Frenchman working together to save Washington's army.
