Strengths: Chant along chorus', epic stories, mythology based (this is a plus for me since I am a history buff), the right mix of harsh vocals and chants/ singing, mixes traditional folk music with metal to create a fun sounding genre.
Weaknesses: Can be really corny, bands are commonly mislabeled as Viking metal for lyrical purposes.

Strengths: The epic essence added into the music and often the intros are definitely one of the things I believe to be the best part of Folk/Viking Metal. The addition of non or irregular "metal" instruments: Flutes, Harp, Hurdy Gurdy, bagpipes, for example.
Weakness: It can often be quite bland, just following the formula that other Folk/Viking Metal bands use and not using their extra instruments to be as creative as possible. The themes don't vary as much as the should, vikings, trolls, goblins, and worriors pretty much rule the genre.

Strengths: Odd instruments that are fun to play, epic-ness, different from everything else (In that it relies on traditional folk tunes instead of standard metal riffs), usually requires a good deal of musical talent, oftentimes fun and upbeat, or uses the best elements of atmospheric black metal. Very cultural lyrics.
Weakness: Trolls and goblins. Some repetitive bands that sound exactly like all the others. Elvenking.

They are THE WORST POSSIBLE EXAMPLE OF FOLK METAL.......EVER. I personally don't even consider them folk metal, that's how much I loathe them.

I'm saying that Elvenking's existence brings the genre down. I completely and wholeheartedly agree with you.

Cons: The fans of folk metal (as with many obscure music genres) tend to be really narrow-minded and "superior" about their music tastes.
Edit: That's NOT intended as a stab at anybody here. Just a general observation.

Hey, I like folk metal along with a giant variety of other stuff too. Like I said, it's not meant as an attack, just an observation of general tendencies I've seen in various places.
