I wnat to learn to sing and so my BD told me to join choir, but I'm really torn about it.
as much as I'd like to learn to sing, I'm nervouse about what the people in the choir will think of me, they all sing really well, and i don't wnat to be the big n00b who has no clue...
I have a very...er....unique voice that really stands out, also, I go to a small school with a very small music program, so, there's no way my voice would be masked by the other singers....it terrifies me.
also, there's a girl who REALLY hates me, and I already have to sit next to her in band...

Maybe, if you can, ask both the choir teacher and your band director(if there's a chorus class during your band class) if you could sit in on the chorus class one day.
This way, you can see how it's run, and maybe try to participate a little to get to know what it feels like. Then decide if you wanna join. That way, you have an opinion of both classes and aren't just heading in blind. 3nodding
@Unique voice: That's just something you'd have to get used to. I've got a...unique voice, too. Of course...everyone hates it when it's 3AM and I'm shouting at fellow MarioKart players on the bus. BUT YEAH THAT'S UNRELATED. My point is(or at least I think it is), everyone's got a unique voice. It's just whether or not you're willing to continue even though you know you will be noticed whether you want to be or not. Goodness knows, I'm a percussionist. You can hear every single note I do and know it's from me no matter what I do. neutral
@Girl who hates you: Just buck up and deal with it. There's a few kids I can name off that I absolutely despise in either my regular classes, or band class, or marching band. You'll always find people who just plain rub you the wrong way. That's probably how it is for her, I assume. Just ignore her or try to show her that you don't give a crap and that her hating you makes no difference to you. :3

Geodesic Glycerin as much as I'd like to learn to sing, I'm nervouse about what the people in the choir will think of me, they all sing really well, and i don't wnat to be the big n00b who has no clue... Chances are you will have better musicianship skills than people who don't have instrumental experience. I don't know about your school, but at my high school I auditioned for the most advanced choir having no singing experience, and was accepted. Then I discovered that a lot of the other singers could barely even read music. We actually had like two hour-long classes covering the names of the notes and reading rhythms and such. It was the most boring thing ever. xD The people in choir who were in band or played piano had a big advantage over the people who only sang when it came to learning songs and sight-reading. It's not just about having a pretty voice. Plus, being in choir will probably improve your instrumental skills too. It'll help with posture, breathing, intonation, listening to the whole group...

I'm sorry for the following, but I just despise chorus and choir.
If you're already a band geek, your fingers will burn upon touching the chorus music.
That happened to me when I tried to read a choral rendition of "Take Five".

Kyuusai Kuruu I'm sorry for the following, but I just despise chorus and choir. If you're already a band geek, your fingers will burn upon touching the chorus music. That happened to me when I tried to read a choral rendition of "Take Five". Don't ruin it! Take Five is one of the many pieces that was not meant to be arranged for a choir, and I joined choir and then band. If you enjoy singing, join the program. Everyone has the ability to stand out or blend it. Its all just in knowing how to blend in. Being an instrumentalist first is a very good idea, and choir helps with breath support. The director will know where to put you, and if you want extra help, you can always find a voice teacher. They really help. The thing about choir is you don't need to sing very well, you just need to be able to hit the notes. Even if you're not sure about it, there will probably be some band kids in the choir, so at least you won't be alone.

My reason for saying you SHOULD join is this - if you want to do anything at all in music, any instrument, composing, ANYTHING - it helps to be able to think musically. Because singing is not done with a thing that you can walk away from, put away, take apart, it's different from instrumental play. You are the instrument. While you learn to sing, in tune and in time, and, hopefully, learn how to read music along the way, you INTERNALIZE the entire musical process. Unless you have a totally tin ear, your singing will improve with work, but, if you play an instrument as well, you'll notice that that gets better too.
You can probably guess how I feel about what other people think?

I think you'll learn a lot from choir. If the girl hates you , take it from a girl, just dont listen to her! Shell leave you alone eventually. Unique voice? Take the volume down a pinch till you get better!
