Veo shrugged. "An ordinary contract like this... facing a demon... potential death in a never-ending cavern...."
She calculated in her head for a few moments. "I just want a decent payment in cash--no rip-offs--and the promise of future work, if any exists. And by no rip-offs, I meant neither by me nor you. I don't work that way. So? Will you still employ me?" she asked, hopefully.
Veo cost some money, but as long as Kranza provided her with some valuable compensation, she would be content to work for him. She possessed no ideals or morals, except regarding the rules of formal contract. But that was within self-interest--because, if you're known as a swindler, who would hire you in the future? Veo was also a deniable asset, because she would act more or less as his mercenary, no questions asked.

Kranza smiled, "Simple, efficient, heartless, I like your style, and be assured there will be much work for you in the future." He said, reaching into his coat he pulled out a large sapphire the size of his fist, showing it to Veo, "Will this cover it?" He asked with a sly smile, knowing that it would cover the price and more.

"That's shiny," Veo commented absently before returning to reality. "Oh, yes, that would most certainly," Veo said. If Kranza felt like overcompensating her, fine, but she wouldn't extort him in the first place. Veo reached out to take the sapphire--sapphires were her favorite--and stared into its mesmerizing depths for a moment. "How did you know, I wonder?" she thought aloud, silently laughing to herself.

Kranza laughed, "I know what you're thinking, I paid you too much, well I have another job for you, and that will cover both of them." He grinned, "Also, if you're wondering how I knew you preferred sapphires....I know a lot about you Veo."

"If it means I get my favorite shines, then I'm completely OK with that," Veo said with a chuckle, still eying the sapphire. "What's the new job?" she asked.
