Next week marks the beginning of the Year of the Earth Ox. Does anyone else actually celebrate this? Asians are always surprised when I know what and when it is... For me, since last year's festivities went so well, we're having another Chinese New Year potluck party at our house. So far the turnout is looking abysmal, but there seems to be some sort of viral vogue for not rsvping at all, or even reading the invitation - lots of people seem to prefer to just show up around the time they think the party might be starting ( scream ). Empty-handed. I'm thinking of making the next one a sit-down dinner with place cards.... stare

Is anybody on here an Ox?
Does anybody else celebrate?
Any great Asian recipes?

(The Fine Living Network has some excellent asian recipes!)

That sounds like fun if you could count on people bringing enough!

eek The pear walnut wontons sound AWESOME! *drool*

Party went okay-ish. It turns out this time only the people who rsvped came, which means we had a metric f-ton of food left over. Watch me not complain! Only one person showed up empty-handed, but since I expected him to (he's never done otherwise, and can't figure out why he can't get a date...), everything was spot-on. I usually make congee (Chinese rice porridge, and it's a lot more appealing than it sounds), but this year I made my signature Miso Soup From Scratch. I don't use the instant broth powders, I make my own stock. It makes a world of difference, and really isn't that hard. We very nearly didn't have the traditional fried pork dumplings, since we had a Muslim coming (I don't like to make guests guess about what's safe to eat), but John insisted so we got a couple of orders.

I could have done with more people showing up for the party, but all told it was a nice quiet evening with a small group of friends and family.
