I'll be coming into some money soon, so I want to upgrade my guitar and amp. I currently play an LTD EC-50, and use a Fender G-Dec Jr. amp. They sound decent, but I want something that'd be kickass for metal and alternative rock. I want something with sick distortion and tone, a guitar and amp that would sound great together. Any suggestions? The most I'll spend is $1000.

I guess there are a few questions to ask before you look
1 - What are your influences? Is there a particular amp or guitar that they all use that would help you shape a sound that you like? 2 - With $1000, I would choose to upgrade either the guitar or the amp, but not both. 3 - How often do you play? Are you playing live? Will you be in the near future? The more you play the more you need to be able to depend on your gear to hold up.

my personal suggestion for awesomness on a budget: peavey valveking combo ($450-500) Ibanez - RG series. but i highly suggest going to a local music store and play around with models to find one that feels good. you can find great gems when just browsing. last week i bought a lotus - 21 fretted strat knock-off for $50. it's beautiful and it plays amazing! the neck has great care and is laquered to perfection. it needs new pickups though. you'll know when you find the steel. wink

I would suggest a Epiphone or Gibson Les Paul and a Marshall amp.

I'd go for a Jackson, one of there Pro Series if you can, they generally aren't too expensive, and I think they do metal very well. Amp-wise, if you can find a used Marshall, then you could probably score some big deals, I got a Valvestate 30 watt that's pretty old, for about $50, which I thought was pretty good. Anyways, I think the Valvestate series is pretty good, so I'd recommend trying to find one.

Your guitar is up to you, but for your amp budget wise, a Peavy is a good amp (if your trying to use less for more)

I would say you should get a epiphone les paul standard and a line 6 spider amp. the les paul is a great upgrade to your ltd, and a good 75watt spider amp sounds great. you should also get a pair of slinky strings with it the left over cash.

I play guitar in a Record Label (signed) metal band, with my personal experience, this is what Id recommend...
Unless you plan on dishing out ATLEAST 1500, stay away from Marshall Amps.
Line 6 is good if your not playing shows, but if your a part of a serious music project, never entrust anything to line 6, they produce on of the worst lines of amps in history.
I would recommend a Peavey Tube Amp of some sort with a B-52 Speaker Cabinet (Peavey speakers sound NOT good at all).
Or for a bit less money, there's a new brand of stack call Raven thats cheaper than line 6 that sounds pretty decent.
Also, the most important part of your sound is the guitar you play. Replace the pick ups (if there stock) with some EMG's, or Seymour Duncan (Invaders are my personal choice).
There's my two cents, take it or leave it. Also, i made this profile quite some time ago, not even sure why i got on here, but I hope you take it well.
I was also not trying to dis any opinions above me, i didnt read them.
Side note, if your looking for a new guitar as well, Ibanez is probably the way to go for metal. Jackson's are cheap rip offs unless you pay a lot of money for them. I personally play Gibson/Epiphone guitars, But thats all personal preference, im most likely going to be purchasing an ESP line of some sort in the near future.
