So I decided that I wanted to get my own bass instead of borrowing other peoples' and doodling on the ones at the music shop.
It might not be exactly new anymore, but I finally got a picture of it. [x]
It's a Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz Bass.
It's actually really nice for a Squier. Ignore that name on the headstock, and it's hardly distinguishable from a Fender.
I'm not saying it's SOSEXYAWESOMESAUCEAMAZINGOMGWTFBBQ, I know how Squiers usually are and have been on the receiving end of their lemons. This is surprisingly high quality.

Unless you go for the mexican or american Fenders, i've always perceived them as being the same as Squiers. That one looks nice and I think you got a good present. Enjoy man.

The MIJ Fenders are amazing, at least on par with the MIA ones, maybe not the Deluxes but the Standards definitely.

There's a used Japanese Fender P bass in my local music shop that has one P and one J style pickup with a 3 way toggle switch. I didn't like it because using the J pickup made it sound really thin.

Hmmm, sounds like a modder got a hold of it to me, I've really never seen Fenders come stock with pickup switches outside of their guitars, normally just volume controls for each pickup or a pickup blender knob. I may very well be wrong though. Could be a P-Bass Lyte though, those are a bit of a different breed, is there a pickguard on it? Or does it look it a bit like an Ibanez GSR200 if you've ever seen one of those.

Nah, it looks just like a regular red P-bass, with a white pickguard. I thought the same thing you did, though.
