Religion is commonly seen as a way to create order in a person's mind, and is therefore one of the best ways of controlling people.
Just look at the Spanish Inquisition. At the harsh colonization of the Americas.
To many, religion explains how the world works, and when two religions clash each person's accepted reality is questioned- often resulting in hatred or fear.

Actually, the inquisition was not so much a method of controlling masses but as a means to cleanse the orders, little known fact about the inquisition was that if you pledged you had a different religion you could not be prosecuted, since the inquisition targeted heretics and not infidels ( though people most usually think of satanists, since they fall on the heretic brand ), though I agree that it was too a form of control, but it has been severly misinterpreted for a long time, the idea behind the inquisition was that there started to be many cases of monks gaining and abusing power on far away lands, and they were brought to jutice by the inquisition, since they could not be presented on a regular trial, of course, over time the idea corrupted into making any enemy an heretic and have him torture and killed :p

The real issue with religion, as Nyz states on her colonization example, lies in the fact that religion usually is closely tied to politics, and no war prior to the 19th century was conducted without the aproval of a religious figure endorsing it, the pope had final say on most wars on the occident for the longest of times, and hence why every modern goverment form excludes religion entirely of its forms.

And I also wholeheartedly agree that when beliefs clash, fists are never far behind.

That's not true, actually. Israel and most of the Islamic countries' laws are based largely on their religion. Also, the fact the the US in particular is based on "a separation of church and state" doesn't necessarily mean that religion is excluded from law. It just means that the government cannot declare an official religion or persecute anyone on account of their religious beliefs. After all it is "One nation under GOD".
This makes me angry.
Ives, what exactly is Mexico's political view on religion? I understand that some of what I'm saying here may not apply to you at all.

Thats exactly why I said modern forms of goverment, they dont exactly sport a modern line, actually they are quite old, and hence why I dont consider them modern forms, and well, Mexico does heavily separate religion and goverment on paper, but Mexico is a heavily religious country, you cant go against the non-oficially but widely regarded as the only religion.
Amd well, USA does have a plethora of religions smile thats what I call a good diversity
