Fish had never considered that. He had always looked at in respect to internal things, never in the larger scope.
"There's certainly never a dull moment," he agreed. "Sometimes I hate all the secrets and fighting and all that, but then I remember that most people never get excitement like this."
"They write books about this kind of stuff," he said, a bit wistful. "They never get to experience any of it."
"I guess we don't realize how lucky we are."

A sharp laugh broke the quiet after Fish’s speech.
“I wouldn’t call us lucky by any stretch of the word. You’re not gunna be lucky if you win, and not a moment before.”
“We’re being forced to ********’ c**k fight for the God’s entertainment, nah, that’s not like we’re some kind of epic hero of some stupid novel.”
He shifted his weight, the cigarette now back in his mouth.
“They wouldn’t be sending their guard dogs in black suits to kill us if we were.”

"Call no man happy 'till he's dead, huh?" asked Fish. He thought he'd heard that somewhere. Or read it. Maybe Poseidon had quoted it to him. That sounded about right - he dimly remembered it being some Greek philosopher.
"But I don't think it's for their entertainment," he continued. "I think it's just as important that we win for them as it is for us if they want to survive. They seem like they're getting kind of desperate. And hey, the last time they played was like 30 AD. Look how much the world's changed since then."
"For one thing," he added, "We're a whole lot younger than Jesus."

His mind worked over what Fish had said; if the game was something more serious than just the fate of the world-- Which, Ciro imagined, was far less important to the Gods than for the world itself-- then the God’s would not be so keen to play in it.
But hell, everyone seemed to be making a huge deal of it. The game seemed to take a whole new meaning to everyone who was not Ciro… To them, they actually worried about dying… Or even what their Gods would be willing to do to them… While Ciro worried about when and where things would be heating up.
He was starting to think that he might be an antagonist.
“Yea, well… We’re a lot less holy too.”
Sighing, he shifted his weight awkwardly. This type of visit… well, it wasn’t normal. Ciro wasn’t sure just what the point of staying around was… It didn’t seem normal for players to just run around talking like good old friends while their gods were pondering over what horrible trials to subject them to.
“So that about sums that up, right? That b*****d grew and we gotta catch up. … By whatever means possible.”

Fish cracked his knuckles and scoped out his exit route. "That's about it," he affirmed. "I just thought you'd like to hear it from me better than if you ran into him and got your a** kicked because you didn't know what was up."
"And hey," he added, "We're friends, right? I can't keep you out of the loop."
He started towards the door. Ciro's demeanor seemed to suggest the visit was over, and he knew better than to trespass. "So, I'll, uh, talk to you later? Maybe once we've both got this figured out?"

“Yea, I’ll find a way to let you know once ‘puberty’ hits again.”
The sounds of bottles clinking followed as the man retreated back to his man-cave.
His loud, raspy voice then called out from his den, forming his after thought.
“Do the same.”
