Read some or all of Carl Jung's work on alchemy first. He has an understanding of alchemy's ultimate goals, a nearly mystical insight into the highly symbolic nature of its lexicon.

The transmutation of base-metal into gold is metaphorical. Understand that right off, or studying alchemy will avail you nothing, and will likely be quite boring.

http://thezodiac.com/alchemy.htm looks like a good place to start.

Lead to gold transmutation has been achieved, but you have to have a nuclear power-source to do it.

Alchemy is not just about transmuting lead to gold, although that is fun. Transmutation is mostly about the rearranging of atomic particals to make one thing something else.

And if your two lazy to read, you could always go and watch Full Metal Alchemist. It's awesome, good story, great characters, and lots 'o alchemy. I highly recommend it.

Suit yourself, I learned all about alchemy from FMA and from Discovery channel, the had a a couple of diffrent shows that did episodes on ancient alchemy. It was interesting, but too human. Thats why I prefer FMA.

...That sounds interesting. *must look it up*

I've been geeky for Alchemy for quite some time. While I don't particularly participate in the metallurgical aspect, I have spent a good chunk of my life considering the symbols and the many aspects.

It can be boring at times, sure, but I find it a complete thrill. Just the history of alchemy alone is filled with mystery. And crackpots.

I blame the mercury.
