At the end of this horse's career when he was being wrung out for a cheap price by his connections... probably trying to recoup their money on a "bad claim".
I suspect that had they invested a little money into whatever surgery the horse needed, they would have been rewarded fo rtheir efforts and expenses.
Actually, before his downhill slide into the cheap claiming ranks, this was a very nice horse.
Since you can see his final 10 starts above, only 3 of his 13 lifetime starts are missing from this racing record... so that means he won at Mdn Sp. Wgt level (highest level for maidens) in one of his first 3 starts.
His 4th start was apparently in over his head at Delaware Allowance level in late August of 2006, and then he didn't race again until winning back-to-back Allowance races at the easier Philadelphia track in November and 5 weeks later, in December.
At that particular point in his career, he had won 3 of his 6 lifetime races... all of them against high caliber competitors.
However, once he "ran through his conditions" (Knee Issue) and was faced with the much tougher stakes and open allowance company, his connections wisely chose to place him racing against the softer company in optional claiming races of $35,000 and $50,000 price tags... both of those races he was entered as "allowance" and not available to be claimed.
Obviously he had been experiencing problems along the way as he is actually very lightly raced.
After his Allowance win in December of 2006, he wasn't raced again until about 2 months later in February 2007... then was laid off 6 months until August when he made his next start... still at a high level of competition, a $50,000 optional claiming race where the trainer withheld the option of him being available to claim... which proves they still wanted the horse and expected him to improve.
I would surmise that surgery was done on the knee after the February 2007 race... enough time elapsed between races for recovery and reconditioning the horse especially if he did some swimming during recovery.
When he ran back poorly in August at the tougher Delaware track at the $50,000 level, it appears that his connections decided to "dump" him by sending him back to the much easier Philadelphia track, placing him in a $16,000 claimer 2 weeks later.
This strategy makes sense because the horse would have increased his fitness in the race 2 weeks earlier at the $50,000 level, and with the drop in competitive level, he should have won the race at $16,000.
It appears he was claimed from that race, and might have been injured since he didn't race again for 10 months.
His new connections apparently decided they had made a bad claim and proceeded to "jam" him at the $5,000 level until someone took the bait... this would be the guy who Amber got the horse from.
The final owner waited 6 weeks before starting the horse back again, and raced him only once before retiring him.
It would be very interesting to see this horse's vet records... I suspect that he may have had previous surgery.
The horse may or may not be still carrying a chip in his knee, or he may have done new damage to it in training or racing.
He may be perfectly sound and if she has the knee x-rayed it may produce clean radiographs.
It's not unusual for a horse to stop running it's best after an injury (they learn to protect themselves)...
The horse ran some fine high caliber Allowance races at age 4... then tapered off at ages 5 and 6... and whether sore or sound, many racehorses are no longer interested in speed games by that age.
In any event, this horse was lightly raced, spreading 13 starts over 3 or 4 years, and judging from the timeline of the 10 past performances showing on the above record, probably
didn't make his first start until midway through his 3 year old season.
If he was mine, I'd get some pictures (x-rays) of that knee just for curiosity sake.
Just wanted to share some TB industry lingo with some of you.
wink What would YOU do with this horse?
