Well I finally got around to watching this movie, and I must say that as ever one couldn’t avoid the hype. What with Heath ledger dying after it, and with the numerous fanboys squealing that it was -essentially- the best film ever made (or something), one’s expectations are already risen to expect it to be lengendary.
And you now what? It isn’t. But that’s ok - and I’ll tell you why.
Now, i’ve never been a batman fan myself. In the DC vs Marvel war i’m there with spiderman shooting kryptonite bullets into superman’s smug head. Batman has always been, in my opinion, a cardboard cutout. He’s a hero with which it’s extremely hard to empathise with - this can be seen from the laughable fun 60’s show with Adam West, through the 90s Tim Burton & co episodes to the modern ‘dark knight’ film. You’re never rooting for Batman. Not really. You’re just on his side because, heck, you’re not a sociopath.
For me, watching the 90’s batman films as a kid, it was always about the villains: Riddler,Twoface,The Joker, Catwoman, the Penguin: it was with them where the originality and gems of the comic lay. So, I was really happy to see the frankly excellent portrayal of the joker in this film and was surprised (and elated) at the appearance of the origins of Twoface, and his frikkin’ awesome character design via the CGI.
So (with Micheal Cain & Morgan freeman fangirlishness aside), the movie was all about the villains to me. The plot dragged and while I grant you it had some good twists, the characters mumbled so damn much that you didn’t know half of what was actually happening if you weren’t paying 100% attention.
The joker’s character was brilliant. Ledger absolutely positively deserved his post-humous Oscar. He really brought the joker’s insanity, humor and evilness to a point taht was truly frightening and truly entertaining. I, like pretty much everyone else I’ve read, will truly lament his passing. He was such a promising actor cut down at the beginning peak to what could have been a stunning career. This last role, is really a testamount to his talent.
Twoface (yes, me and my mum went the whole film going ‘lookit the coin! he is so going to be twoface!) - was also brilliantly imagined and updated. While I love the Tommy lee Jones Twoface, this film brought him really into reality and made him really dark. And that CGI for his face....ooh soo good. I’m a bit of an anatomy freak, and I loved how they did it. Seriously- find screenshots. It’s so scary and soo anatomically brilliant. This is what technology can do for you *nods*
[what can I say? Whenever I think of my Death character decomposing I always imagined his mouth to look a bit like that. So to se it in actual 3d was amazing for me. I’m a geek i know XD]
In conclusion: This film is brilliant for it’s villains, and isn’t a bad film either. But it’s nothing hugely special. I didn’t get the hype - but still very much worth a watch. Especially if you’re a batman fan.
Ok if you're not going to be disturbed by it......
