On your way out of the exam room an employee hands you three Pokeballs. "Please continue to arena 2 in the park across the street. Your opponent will be Professor Oak of Pallet Town. Thank you for participating in our test and good luck."

Your Pokemon are:
Chikorita
Cyndaquil
Totodile

As you arrive at your designated arena you hear the last trainers score. "Not bad at all Justin 55 out of 75. In the future try to move before your opponent if you get the chance. Delaying to watch the opponent is a valid strategy but if you wait too long you'll fall behind in the battle. I look forward to seeing you at the conference this year."

One of Oak's assistants ushers you forward. The field looks relatively untouched save for a small scorch mark on your end. "Welcome Miss Bright." calls the professor from the far end of the field. "I hope the exam didn't wear you out too much. Just let me know when you're ready and we'll begin."

"I'm ready," Alice told Professor Oak, raising her voice so it would be heard on the other side of the field. She was surprised to be seeing Professor Oak in person; he was very well known even back in Sinnoh. She was nervous, but also determined to try her best.

"Lets start out simple then. Ready?" He tossed a Pokeball from his coat forward. It bounced once and opened to reveal a Charmander, fired up and ready to battle."

Choosing her Pokemon wasn't hard. Finding the pokeball she wanted, Alice threw it out onto the field, releasing a Totodile snapping its jaws eagerly. Water versus fire, it was kind of predictable, but at least she would have a type advantage. Thankfully, it was pretty easy to tell what type each Pokemon was. She wasn't too sure what to do now, though. Should she wait for Charmander to make the first move, or should she do it herself?

She remembered what she had heard only a few minutes earlier, the advice given to the trainer before her. "In the future try to move before your opponent if you get the chance." She didn't know what Charmander could do, and was a little wary of attacking right away...but maybe she didn't have to attack?

"Totodile, Screech," she told it uncertainly, worried that it might not know the move. However it looked like Totodile did, as it opened its mouth wide, revealing pointed teeth, and Screeched at Charmander. Alice breathed a sigh of relief. Okay, calm down, she told herself. It'll be fine.

((Whoops. I made a mistake. I thought I gave you the first gen starters. Oak Oak actually used a Charmander instead. It shouldn't make any difference though. If you want to change your move go ahead.))

Chamander covered its ears trying to block out the noise. Oak stuck his fingers in his ears doing the same. "Excellent. I wonder if you'll follow up with the correct move. I better get moving myself. Slash!" Chamander took its claws down and quickly leaped forward striking towards Totodiles belly.

(Ah, okay. I'll just leave my move the way it is though.)

"Totodile, try and get out of the way!" Alice called, but Totodile wasn't fast enough. It fell to the ground from the force of Charmander's attack. However it seemed to take it pretty well, and got up soon afterwards, looking rather annoyed at Charmander. High defense? Alice wondered.

Alice sensed that it was time for them to attack back. With what, though? Okay. That Screech just now should have lowered Charmander's defense...so what would be a good move to follow up with? A physical attack, right? What physical attacks would Totodile know? Hm...

"Okay, Totodile, try Crunch!" she yelled. It was a pretty safe guess---Totodile had some scary-looking jaws and teeth, and it probably knew how to use them. Totodile lunged forward with its mouth wide open, ready to clamp down anywhere it could.

Totodile bit down hard on Charmander's claw causing the Pokemon to cry out. Oak returned his pokemon. "Pretty good. I would have gone with 'aqua tail' myself but with Totodiles strong jaws 'crunch' is an excellent choice."

"Lets move on shall we. Bulbasaur." He tossed his next Pokemon forward. "Whenever you're ready dear, just switch out your Pokemon."

"Okay," Alice replied, returning Totodile to its pokeball. Her next choice was the fire-type Cyndaquil, and it appeared on the battlefield with flames shooting out of its back.

Alice paused, trying to remember what this Pokemon could do. Using a fire-type move seemed like a good idea. "Alright, Cyndaquil, try...Flamethrower!" Fire streamed out of Cyndaquil's mouth, heading in Bulbasaur's direction.

"Roll Bulbasaur!" Oak quickly shouted. The attack still grazed the Pokemon but the flames that had jumped to Bulbasaurs vulnerable body were immediately extinguished. "Right. Now Sleep powder." Bulbasaurs bulb swelled for a moment before releasing a cloud of spores into the air. The spores glinted in the sunlight a moment before drifting down towards Cyndaquill.

Sleep Powder would be bad if it caught Cyndaquil. "Dodge it!" Alice called. Cyndaquil ran to the side, trying to avoid the spores. Most of them missed Cyndaquil, falling harmlessly down to the ground, but some hit their target. It wasn't enough to make Cyndaquil fall asleep instantly, but it was enough to make it drowsy and slow down its movement.

"Um...okay, use Swift!" Cyndaquil was sleepy and its aim wasn't as good as before, but she had never heard of that move missing. Cyndaquil shook its head and fired star-shaped rays at its opponent.

Professor Oak smiled. "Not bad at all. Quite an adept maneuver." Blubasaur soaked up the light blows but was tiring out. Oak returned his second Pokemon and tossed out a Squirtle who crouched low to the ground. "I've got a few tricks up my sleeve though for this one. I hope you're ready."

Recalling Cyndaquil, Alice released her last Pokemon. A Chikorita appeared on the field, adopting a firm stance. Tricks? Alice thought, considering her next move. I better be careful then...

"Poisonpowder, Chikorita!" she shouted. Chikorita moved forward a little and released a cloud of bright purple powder, similar to the spores Bulbasaur had used. She was hoping that the Poisonpowder would wear Squirtle down and make it easier for Chikorita to fight.
