Dawn broke. It was still a little strange to be unoccupied at this hour. Usually she would be beginning her work, whatever it might be on any given day. Today, and indeed for the foreseeable future, her time was essentially her own. Orlaith bent to nibble at a patch of purple-red flowers and savored their sweetness. She usually never got to eat things like this. Being away from the mountain definitely has its advantages. There were drawbacks too of course, she didn’t know anyone, didn’t have any close friends here and honestly sometimes she missed her work. It was easy to get bored when you could do whatever you wanted whenever you wanted. She wondered how most Katilenuck coped, how they whiled away so many hours...
But of course, she did have work to do. Talk to people, and listen to them. It wasn’t like fetching food or running messages, wasn’t really a solid thing, but it was still there at least. Taking another mouthful of the sweet flowers, Orlaith pondered the day ahead, chewed over the directions she could steer conversations in. Herds, especially those on the rise, and anything she could gather about the Katilenuck. It was a little shocking to find out how much most people hated the brindled herd. That just went to show how much the way you were raised could affect your world view, she supposed.
Smiling faintly to herself, the diamond-patterned mare raised her head and inspected her surroundings. Surely she would run into somebody soon; for all its vastness D’ob never seemed to lack people.

And indeed she would, just not literally.
"I'm gonna get you, Skittles!!" The red-cream mare called to the small rainbow-spotted creature who so eluded her. She beamed as she cantered after him, trying to 'pounce' on him - not literally, of course; she didn't want to hurt him - but he was too small and too fast. This was one of her favorite games, and she'd get him eventually! Even if she had to chase him until he got tired, she'd get him. However, she noticed the white Ichsa nearby before he did and stopped, completely forgetting about the game. "Hi there!" She said with a grin. "Who're you? My name's Nizhoni, Niz for short, and that's Skittles!"
The small Rit was weaving back and forth with a grin, happy - for once - about how small he was. He could turn quicker than the nequus behind him could, and had faster reflexes - although she noticed things faster than he did, apparently.
He managed to stop in time, but ended up sending himself tumbling head over paw right beneath the oddly-patterned mare Niz had begun talking to. He let out a panicked squeak-like sound as he stared at her upside-down, before scurrying around her and back to Niz, who promptly prodded him in the head with the tip of a tendril wing and a broad grin. "I win!"

Orlaith started up in surprise and spun around to face the owner of the sudden voice. When she took in the other Ichsa mare, she grinned and then laughed at herself for a few moments. She’d been so busy looking ahead of herself and off to the sides she’d completely failed to notice the odd pair approach.
“Hello there!” she responded cheerfully once she’d finished chortling. “My name’s Orlaith, and I didn’t notice you coming over! Nice to meet you both!” This was the first Ichsa she’d seen outside of the herdlands, save her memories of her parents of course. She had been told that Ichsa were horribly proud things when not given the proper training, and from what she recalled of her sire there was some basis for such a stereotype. Her mother, however, hadn’t been proud that she recalled and Niz seemed promising so far too.
“It’s a lovely morning, isn’t it?” the red-eyed mare added with another smile. “I do like D’ob first thing in the morning, mind you I like it most of the time really!” Even now, when it was chill in much of the world, the valley remained merely cool. Back home there would be biting winds and all manner of unpleasantness. It was definitely a good thing that Dahak had sent her out to investigate the world for him. True she was supposed to look into more hostile-weathered areas as well as D’ob but she was planning to get to that. Once the world warmed up again in any case; more exotic explorations would keep for the time being.

"Ooh yes, it's nice to meet you too. I love the valley all the time - it's especially pretty during the sunrise and sunset. Have you seen either yet?" She asked, tilting her head with the question. She alternated between getting up early and going to bed later so she could see both. It was always so pretty, except in bad weather, of course. Names? Oh, yes, names. "Orlaith? That's such a pretty name - and you're so pretty, too. I've never seen anyone with that kind of pattern before," the red-creme mare said earnestly as she studied the diamond-patterned Ichsa before her. "Isn't she pretty, Skittles?"
"What? Oh," he said, actually taking the time to look at her markings instead of looking at a huge nequus that could step on him if she wanted to. "Yeah, very pretty." As far as nequus went, anyway. Now, if a Rit looked like that... That would be a completely different story. "Ow! Oh! Umm.. Nice to meet you Orlaith," he blurted quickly after receiving a prod in the side from his companion's hoof. What was a small prod for her was a big push for him, nearly knocking him over. If he didn't forget to say things like that, he wouldn't have to deal with being reminded. Oh well.
Niz grinned at the rainbow-spotted feline, then smiled at the other mare. "So, d'you live around here?"

Orlaith grinned and shook her head. “No, I don’t live around here but I have seen a few sunsets and sunrises here recently.” It was nice that they thought she was pretty, she usually didn’t get very much appreciation of that kind back home; Katilenuck went for other Jala and most other slaves were too tired and disillusioned to think very much about prettiness. “I love your eyes,” the slight mare said to Niz after a moment, “I’ve never seen anyone with eyes quite that green before; they’re quite beautiful, and as for you,” she smiled down at Skittles, “I adore rainbows.”
These two did seem nice, though the Rit was a bit nervous. Perhaps she could make friends of them; it would be nice to have friends out in the world. Master Dahak probably wouldn’t approve of her taking time out from her duties to socialize but he was never going to find out so that hardly mattered. She’d still do as he’d asked, of course, he was good to her and she did want to please him, she just wasn’t willing to work day in day out for him. Back home she got breaks, so why shouldn’t she take them out here too? No reason at all.
“Do you guys live here then?” Orliath asked a moment later, wondering vaguely if they might have seen her mother around if they did... No, Niz had just said she hadn’t seen markings like hers before. Ah well, she could always keep her eyes open as she traveled; you never knew your luck.

"Yep! I've lived in the valley for as long as I can remember - which isn't too long. I lost my memory at some point, you see," she explained with a nod, "but I met a nice Aeri mare who offered me a home in her herd in the valley. She's very nice, you should meet her sometime. Her name's Nyx, she's got a short mane and tail, and she's orange with blue splotches." She'd have to seek Nyx out at some point soon, she hadn't seen the splotched mare in much too long. "I dunno where Skittles lived before, but I met him when I was with my friend Virgil - he's a dark blue Bae, very pretty colors - and he's lived with me here ever since." That was another face she'd have to look for; she hadn't seen Virgil in ages, either. She wondered how the skittish stallion was doing, hopefully not as scared of.. well, everything.
"I just kinda.. wandered around before, nothing too exciting," he admitted, jumping up onto Niz's back where he was safer, and not likely to get stepped on. "How 'bout you? Where do you live?"

...Well, it certainly was a small world. It was hard to believe that her fellow slave, slave to the same master even, had known this mare before he became Dahak’ property. “Oh, I live by the red mountains really but I’m doing some traveling right now,” the curly-maned mare said with a smile and a nod. “I’d been there in one place since I was a filly, so I flet like it was about time I went out and saw the world again... Must suck not being able to remember where you came from.” Still, Niz didn’t seem too distressed by it, and she had to say she approved of that. There was nothing that annoyed her more than people who moped rather than making the best of life as it was.
“Actually,” Órlaith went on after a moment, “I think I might know Virgil too. He lives nearby me, but he doesn’t like to leave the place anymore,” she grinned conspiratorialy, “he’s got himself an unrequited love and seems to be completely happy with the situation so long as he can just be around him. It’s quite sweet really.” She hoped Niz wouldn’t go investigating; last thing she wanted was for such a friendly mare to be taken as a slave. Whilst she herself was happy as she was, she knew she’d been lucky when it came to masters and that other people put in her position might well be really quite unhappy.

The red mountains? She couldn't remember if she'd heard anything about the place or not. She probably had, but the memory flitted about just out of reach, and after a moment or two she gave up trying to remember, and offered the other mare a grin. "I bet it's nice there, but I agree; it's nice having a home in one place but it's also nice to explore, too. Have you gone to Quirne yet? I have some friends there, it's absolutely gorgeous in the spring and summer months." Orlaith would have to go see the ocean, it was simply breath-taking. Speaking of which, she'd have to go see it eventually too, and maybe find Maurice as well. She hadn't seen him in some time.
"Really?" She blurted, ears pricked. This mare knew Virgil, too? Wonderful! "Skittles met Virgil, too! Oh, that's wonderful! I'm glad he's happy now, poor thing was so skittish and scared of everything when I met him. Is he better now?" She really hoped so, it was awful to go around being afraid of everything.
"Oh, yeah!" Skittles said, perking up a bit. He remembered the blue bae quite clearly. "I scared him by accident, I didn't mean to.. I hope he's not mad about that," he said sheepishly.
"When you see him again, can you tell him that I hope he's doing well? And that it's wonderful that he's found somewhere that he can be happy. That's wonderful," she beamed, quite happy. She may have to seek Virgil out, since he wouldn't be leaving; but from what the diamond-patterned mare said, he sounded quite happy, and that was good enough for the foolish Ichsa.

Órlaith nodded and grinned to the pair. “I’ll pass that on next I see him! He’s still shy and quiet and everything, but I think he feels secure where he is now, and like I say he’s certainly happy.” It would be nice to have something to report to Virgil as well as everything she’d have to tell Dahak. She was sure the icy-coloured Bae would be glad to hear from Niz; to her it seemed that anyone who met the cheerful mare once would be delighted to get an update on her wellbeing.
“I’ve never been to Quirne, no,” the slim Ichsa said with a shake of her head. “I’m planning on heading that way soon though, once it isn’t quite so cold! Seems like D’ob is the only place to be in the winter if you like your comfort like I do.” There would be plenty of things here to keep her busy until spring. Then she could make a quick trip to the coast and work her way back home via the crystal lands. Yes, that sounded like a good plan.

"Thanks," she grinned, happy enough to almost start dancing in place. She could, of course, but she refrained from doing so. It really was nice to know that Virgil was doing so well. "I'm very glad he's better now, that's wonderful." She'd almost didn't think he'd get better, with how skittish he was, but it seems he did and that was just... wonderful. She really was very glad.
"Yes, you'll have to go in spring; the winters there are really bad, so the valley is the best place to stay. And yes, I think it is," she grinned, flicking her tail. "Oh, and I suggest watching the sunset at Quirne once or twice, as well. It's much better than those here in the valley, it's gorgeous. Of course, Skittles wouldn't know much about that, now, would you?"
"I don't like the ocean," he admitted, settling himself more comfortably onto the creme mare's back. "Too much water for my liking."
"Scaredy Rit," she teased.
"And proud of it," he said with a broad grin.

The fiery-coloured mare chuckled and nodded her head. “Right! Springtime and sunsets; I’ll remember! I want to go and see the crystal lands too sometime; I passed through on my way here but I didn’t stop to look around. There’s lots of water again I’m afraid,” she said with a smile to Skittles, “but I picked my way through mostly dry, and you could probably get around just by jumping from tree to tree if you wanted; the bit I went through they were mostly quite close together, clustered around the rivers and lakes.”
She had heard that there were strange Reya living in the depths of Yisi, ones adapted to living in the water. She wasn’t sure if she believed that or not, but it was certainly worth investigating. Not on this trip though, she thought. She really ought to hurry back home once she’d seen Quirne or Dahak might start to think she wasn’t returning at all! Much as she was enjoying her freedom, she had no intention of running from the herd permanently; her friends were there, and her tree-sister was there. Sure it was nice to be able to do what you wanted when you wanted to, but as she’d thought several times, you tended to run out of things to do eventually or she did at any rate. Having work to do almost all day every day made her appreciate what little time off she did get back home; it was a good life really.
“I’ve heard that the views of Casa Tiner are lovely too. From a distance, anyway,” Órlaith added with a grin. “I couldn’t imagine anyone silly enough to actually try to climb them!”

Yisi, humm? Well, he could just stay on Niz's back there, if they did go, and with how easily influenced the creme mare was, that would likely happen at some point now that Orlaith had mentioned it. Either way, he'd find some way to stay dry, on her back or not. He couldn't comment however, trying too hard to stifle a yawn - but in the end he lost, and yawned rather more loudly than he would've liked to. It was close to one of his naptimes, anyway.
The green-eyed mare grinned broadly; they should go to Yisi sometime! It sounded really neat, like Quirne but without the waves. They both had a lot of water! Well, she knew Quirne did, and from what the firey mare had said it sounded like Yisi had lots too.
Casa Tiner? "Yes, that is pretty to look at, but I don't want to go anywhere near it!" However, at hearing the yawn her companion had failed to keep to himself, she giggled. "Sounds like someone's naptime again! We should probably go now, so he can take another nap before bed." She didn't know why he slept a lot, he was so silly. Were all rits like that? She wasn't sure. "It was nice meeting you Orlaith! Thank you for telling Virgil for me!"
"Yes, nice meeting you and thanks," the rainbow-patterned feline said through another yawn. He wasn't trying to be rude, but he was getting rather tired. Rits needed naps, after all.

Orlaith giggled as the fluffy little fellow was ambushed by sleepiness. "It was lovely to meet both of you as well, and thanks for telling me about Quirne! The more I know about the places I'm exploring the better." ...Oh dear, she hadn't asked Niz anything at all about herds or what people said of her own herd. Nevermind; while the orange mare seemed very nice, she didn't seem all that in touch with current events. Maybe she would have to track down this Nyx Niz had spoken of and ask her about the world and its goings on.
"Enjoy your nap then," she said with a smile and a bob of her head, "I'm going to go and see if I can make any more friends today!" So saying, she gave the pair a final nod and set off once more in the direction she'd been heading before they had appeared. Orange and blue and splotchy. Couldn't be that hard to find, she was sure.
