I'd imagine that several of the guilds members are rather knowledgable when it comes to pirates. I know I am. So if anyone has any questions. About the history of piracy, modern piracy, pirate lingo, pirate clothes, historical pirates, questions on how to be a pirate, etc... Ask them here and we'll all help you to find the answer! 3nodding

Didn't it depend on how large a crew? I mean, your average schooner was fine for a smaller crew, but then a Galleon would hold many, many people (so perhaps only for enormous pirate crews?)
I could be wrong sweatdrop

You're right (for the most part), but you misunderstood my question. I already know everything about old pirate ships. I'm asking about modern piracy. Like for hitting up-to-date cargo ships.

Please excuse my sillyness smile I'll get back to you on this one, I have a few ideas of what I thought it was but I wanna read up some more....also, it will help me procrastinate on my schoolwork longer!

I specialize more in the "golden age" of piracy, but here's some general info on just how pirate work, in general.
Most pirates prefer to use fast, agile vessels, so as to easily catch up to and then attack the "prey". Since large ships can be difficult to hide, and can also be rather slow and clumsy, smaller vessels are preferred. Usually small to medium sized ships were used.

Gah! gonk I appreciate the advice, but nobody seems to understand quite what I'm asking. I specialize in the golden age of piracy too and I know that I need a ship that's relatively small and very fast. What I need to know is about specific models and ship security systems. The problem with wanting to be a pirate is that nobody will tell you how to do it. If you want to go into painting, business, medicine, music, anything, people will tell you how to do it. There are books, articles, internships, courses, private lessons, experienced people in the field, etc... But with something illegal like piracy, you're left to figure it out on your own. crying

Well, first off, I'd have to say that you really need to be careful about where you attack. The closer to USA shores you are, the greater chance of there being a nearby Navy warship ready, willing, and able to defend the cargo ship to the fullest of its limit.
Also, the closer you get to Somalia and other countries where Piracy is beginning to return, the US Navy forces there are actually beginning to undergo Anti-Piracy training designed to prepare the crew for the possibility of Pirate attack, as well as what they need to do in order to win. These tactics are based from what is known about the aforementioned Pirates in Somalia, etc.
Finally, if either God or Lucifer decides that they're going to make you into today's entertainment, you could run into a fully manned Naval Strike Force. These consist of several Destroyers, some Amphibious ships, several submarines (both guided missile AND fast attack, NONE of which you will see until you either attempt attack or refuse to leave when told to; by then, you'll probably have 3 or 4 that are 100% locked on to you), and at least one fully manned Aircraft Carrier, which you will almost for sure never see, as its sole mission in combat is to launch and recover combat aircraft as they attack you, while the rest of the ships are there to attack you and defend the Carrier itself. You will be against at least 15 military vessels at once, plus a full Air Wing. When it comes to power of the seas, the US Navy has a deathgrip on it.
A single small, fast vessel will NOT be enough to keep you safe in the modern seas. You would need a great many vessels, both of the small, fast AND the big, slow, and powerful variety, in order to stand a chance anymore.

Well yeah, I'm not gonna pirate around here! gonk Dread Pirate Illuvatar Also, the closer you get to Somalia and other countries where Piracy is beginning to return, the US Navy forces there are actually beginning to undergo Anti-Piracy training designed to prepare the crew for the possibility of Pirate attack, as well as what they need to do in order to win. These tactics are based from what is known about the aforementioned Pirates in Somalia, etc. Dude, what US Navy forces? xd Somalia is practically in anarchy. It's easy pickings. Unfortunately those idiotic pirates that recently attacked a Russian warship have ruined it for all of us. At least temporarily. I'm not going to Somalia till it cools down. In the meantime, the Indonesian and Japanese coasts are looking good. Dread Pirate Illuvatar Finally, if either God or Lucifer decides that they're going to make you into today's entertainment, you could run into a fully manned Naval Strike Force. I'm not gonna attack a Navy ship. rolleyes What good would even come of that if I won? And I'm not dumb enough to try and find out. And by the way, they aren't going to blow up my ship for refusing to move. Which I wouldn't do in the first place, because that would pointless and stupid. Pirates need to fly under the radar, so to speak. I'm not gonna go causing needless ruckus. Dread Pirate Illuvatar A single small, fast vessel will NOT be enough to keep you safe in the modern seas. You would need a great many vessels, both of the small, fast AND the big, slow, and powerful variety, in order to stand a chance anymore. I'm not waging a war. I'm trying to make a living. And just for the record, there's no such thing as " safe piracy".

Just because there's no publicity doesn't mean there are no ships out there. Remember: all the media is in Iraq. Somalia is decidedly NOT Iraq.
The US Navy has 5 different bases in Japan. The Japanese coast hasn't looked good for piracy because of that since WWII ended.
Indonesia, however, looks damn good...

How did the media find it's way into this conversation? Dude, TRUST ME. Somalia does NOT have a solid, organized defense against crime of any kind, much less on the water. They're a mess. I didn't say Japan would be easy. I simply said it would be good for business. There's lots of loot to be plundered off the coast of Japan.
