Wow! Berz is really something isn't she? Thanks for that info Berzie!
I must say though that I have no idea where to find such stones. I bet a specialized store should have them but I don't know where to find one here where I live. Hmm, maybe one called "The Museo"...
So, no comments on my seashells idea? Oh well... rolleyes And this is how you want the threads to be active? lol

I must have missed your seashells suggestion Hypno. Do something with it if you want. I do wish people would stop asking me if they can make certain threads. If there's a topic with a fantasy/historical aspect to it that doesn't already exist as a thread then MAKE ONE! Just make sure they're in the right subforums.

Well that idea wasn't about making another thread since it has to do with the subject of this thread already. I just wanted someone to comment on it, that's all... sad *makes puppy dog eyes*

Ok, here's my "Sea Shells" idea again in case a lot of people missed it. hypnocrown BTW, I just thought of something you could use as a communication device on a fantasy setting. Know how you can hear the ocean when you pick up a sea shell? Well, what if you could enchant a couple of them so they'll work kinda like walkie talkies? Other than using magic to make them work, I can't think of a different way to do so. mrgreen I suppose I'm kinda like Stan Lee in that sense, I like to take the easy way out, he-he. Don't you think that could work? Like, I give you one of the shells and I keep the other one. As long as you keep yours and I keep mine we can communicate like they're a couple of cell phones or alike. I mentioned the Walkie Talkie thing cuz that's more accurate instead of a cell phone.

Tough one.
The idea would only strike me if there was something else that could be attached to the shells, such as gemstones with magical properties. Shells do not reproduce the sound of the sea, but instead amplify surrounding sounds, as this website states - Do you hear the sea from a shell?
Marine creatures tend to use echo location more than sight to find prey, or to navigate, so if you created something out of sea shells for communication and related it to aquatic civilisations, then there might be something to be developed there.

Yeah, I sort of knew that shells don't actually reproduce a sound. I Do recall hearing somewhere that their shape helps the amplification of sound. It's why some instruments are shaped like shells for that purpose. Still, my idea wasn't saying anything about reproducing sounds exactly, was it? Hey! Would it always have to include a gemstone of some kind for it to work? Couldn't it somehow be an enchanted couple of shells that become sort of linked by an invisible link? The idea of how twins are always connected comes to mind.
I'm glad you liked my idea for the purpose of marine creatures. I'm not sure if I may have seen something similar before and I subconsciously tried to make it my idea. Still, it would seem that it might have more uses than just for underwater and such. You know? neutral

I was thinking that if a shell was used as a communication device it would be to contact a 'water spirit' of the sea who'd given it to the user... given that it's the sea that you're supposedly able to hear when you put one to your ear that makes the most sense to me. Perhaps you could then ask a favour of the spirit you'd contacted to relay a message on to someone else, but I wouldn't make it as commonplace and easy as making a phone call, more a potentially repeatable trade of favours that you have to earn by doing something for the spirit.

Hypno, how would I know if they'd have to have gemstones to work or not? Fantasy is what you want it to be. I just prefer mine to have more realism combined with magic and the supernatural because I am a believer in both of the latter.
Others may just say "it's fictional", but I believe in such things and there are certain things that I find more probable than others. If you want to take my research and opinions on fantasy as literal, then by all means do so. If you want to take them as ideas to find your own credibility and nothing more, then that's fine too. 3nodding

So that's what you were thinking, eh Eoforgar? I kinda think that sounds pretty stereotypical but that's just cuz shells and the sea get so commonly related. If you want to do it that way be my guest. What would you design to use to contact a Wind Spirit then? Or how about a Fire Spirit? I bet an Earth Spirit might be tough to come in contact with. Or maybe not so much... mrgreen
How would you know my dear Mel? I don't know really. I do see yer point about making things more realistic.
I also understand what you meant by you believing in such things and I usually do take in consideration the opinions of my friends. Thanks for posting! wink
So, does anyone else have another sort of thing that could be used to communicate? I was trying to come up with a different one but I couldn't really figure something out. Maybe later...

Ha-ha! Plank of wood, that's a good one! I was thinking more like something that was found on the seafloor but wasn't as obvious as a seashell. Hey? How about a fossil from a water creature? Maybe it would be a bit different from a seashell and still similar at the same time. Maybe that could be a good way for communicating that wasn't so stereotypical.
It's too bad nobody else is posting here... sad
