For any characters that we don't already know the animagus form of, what do you think it would be? It must signify their personality in some deep manner, similar to how the Patronus does. However, the Patronus pertains specifically to someone that the wizard loves, where as an animagus merely signifies the wizard himself.
For example, we know that:
McGonagall is a cat for being intelligent and independant. cool
Sirius is a dog for being fun-loving and loyal to his 'pack.' heart
James is a stag for being a leader and the objective of a 'hunt.' I was thinking more along the lines of him being hunted by Voldemort and his Death Eaters, but maybe the girls that didn't fancy Sirius hunted him, too. rofl
Peter is a rat because he ratted out his freinds. evil
Rita is a beetle because beetles move dung around! lol (JKR has a sense of humour, so that could really be why Rita is a bettle. After all, JKR named the family Dursley because she thought "it sounded boring and forbidding." However, there might be a deeper reason that I'm unaware of since I admit to not being an expert on insect metaphors.)
So, what about the Golden Trio, their friends, and their rivals? What would their animagus forms be?

I've analysed Remus so closely trying to determine what his animagus form would have been. After careful consideration, and one of my fave fan fics authors including it one of her fics, I believe Remus would've been a fox. They're a canine, so they're pack is important to them, but they're a bit more reserved than a wolf or a dog. Also, foxes are considered intelligent and sly. While James and Sirius' pranks were probably loud and boisterous, Remus' were more likely of subtle, crafty sort.
Luna is a dolphin. She's a fun, free-spirited person, but she's also highly intellectual and very loyal to her pod. (A pod is a dolphins' pack, for those of you that don't know).

I'd have to respectfully disagree with you there. Remember that Remus was a werewolf, even back in his childhood. Probably since he was eight or so. I believe this would have effected his magic in all forms, thus making his animagus a wolf.

Luna is a dolphin. She's a fun, free-spirited person, but she's also highly intellectual and very loyal to her pod. (A pod is a dolphins' pack, for those of you that don't know). I believe you may be right. Lupin was a very clever man. Luna however has a rabbit for an animagus. I have the same personality as Luna. Shy but bold, smart but gullible, loyal, fun loving, and curious. She would be a rabbit. Often your patronous(sp?) is your animagus. Unless of course you true self, and who, when and what you draw your happy memories from are two different people, because of a life altering event, like with what happen to Tonks. After Sirius dies her patronus(sp?) becomes that of a wolf like dog. If you need further proof, Minerva's animagi and patronous form are one and the same. As was James Potter, and Sirius Black. I think Dumbledore's would transform into a pheonix. I believe his familiar became a phoenix, after the death of his sister and his slaying his love Grindelwald. He has to shed his old life, even though he didn't want to, he stopped being so driven in his pursuit of power and realized power was not what he needed, he became peaceful hating fighting unless it was necessary, and his view of the truth and family shifted. He became a person who appears happy, and was there for all of those who needed him, even if what he was doing wasn't always the best for them, but on the inside he was always mourning. The accident and death of his sister, the loss of his mother and father, the rift between him and his brother, his part in creating Voldemort(sp?) and the death of those that fought with him. But he didn't give up and pushed on. I think this is what made Fawkes stay with him, and what made his patronous and what I believe his Animagus form would have been. He was a beautiful person but very sad inside.

Sylvia, I agree that being a werewolf since early childhood affects Remus' personlity. For example, he hates losing control during the full moon, so he exerts a lot of self-control during his daily life. However, the characteristics associated with a wolf - fierceness and such - don't apply to Remus' personality, so I don't think it would be his animagus form.
Katie, I completely agree with you about Dumbledore being a phoenix. He was "reborn" as a person after the incident with his sister and would-be-lover. Also, "they can carry immensely heavy loads," which Dumbledore did everyday in a metaphorical sense.
Really? Yyou're just like Luna? surprised I LOVE her! exclaim heart I adore how bizarre she is and how she doesn't care what others think. I have those two qualities too, though I'm more down-to-earth than Luna is.
Anyway, I could see Luna being a rabbit, but if she was I don't think it would be because it was her Patronus. Many fan fics authors assume your patronus and animagus forms are similar, but I completely disagree with that concept. The Patronus represents someone you love and the animagus form represents the wizard.
Does anyone think clumsy Tonks would have a wolf for her animagus form, or that Snape would have a gentle doe just because that's what their Patronuses are?Quote: If you need further proof, Minerva's animagi and patronous form are one and the same. As was James Potter, and Sirius Black. If you can find an interview where JKR said this then I'll have to concede that sometimes they are the same. (Only sometimes, for there is no way that Snape is a doe or Tonks is a wolf.) Because JKR's word is law. 3nodding *bows to JKR*
Speaking of Snape, I like a raven for his animagus form. It's black like his clothes (we know from McGonagall's glasses that something you constantly wear affects the animal's looks.) so it blends in with the shadows the way that he does with the Death Eaters. Ravens tend to have a reputation for being associated with evil and death even though it might not be true. Ravens are highly intelligent and good for relaying messages. Snape relayed messages - often merely half-truthful ones - to Voldemort, and he's undoubtedly one of the most intelligent people in the series.
(You all probably know that pigeons were usually used for delivering messages by Muggles instead of ravens because pigeons aren't associated with evil tidings, and they are less independant, which makes them easier to train.)
Of course, a bat would work for Snape, too. They can also blend in with shadows and are normally deemed wicked. Additionally, in the books, JKR gives Sirius dog-like traits, such as "bark-like laugh," and Harry more than once views Snape as an "overgrown bat" with his billowing robes. A bat is more likely, but it's just that...Well, I think ravens are cooler than bats! xd
Draco should be a ferret! rofl Okay, maybe not, but the idea makes me chortle.

I think Rowana Ravenclaw would be an Owl! because they are wise, seemingly secretive, and a little spooky. O-o
Obvious: Salazar Slytherin and Voldy are snakes.

Hagrid's animal form would have been a panda. He's big, cute, and cuddly until you make him mad! Just like a panda.
I see Cedric Diggory as a red-tailed hawk for some reason. I don't know why.

Since the original question was the Golden Trio, their friends and their rivals, I'm going to start on that list.
Harry Potter: After careful consideration, I believe that Harry is a Golden Retreiver dog, because he is very friendly, very sweet, and fiercely protective of the ones he cares about. He is loyal, and he loves a good game of catch (hello, catching the snitch!). He is a good friend and a strong person, and has pretty much the same kind of personality that makes Golden Retreivers such great pets. The thing that identifies him are his green eyes, uncommon to a Retreiver.
Ronald Weasley: Ron is a bit harder, because he is very similar to Harry. In the end, I'm going to say he's also a dog, because they are a very loyal animal, but he is not a Retreiver. I think that Ron is probably not any particular breed, but more of a mutt, because he is from a very hectic family and often feels out of place, even second best to his 'purebred' (aka famous and talented) friend Harry. Still, he is sweet, like a puppy in a way. He is identified by the strange patch of red on his head.
Hermione Granger: I think that Hermione is an owl, for obvious reasons. She is very intellegent and is seen as the symbol of reason throughout the series. Always with her nose in a book, she often reminds me of old fairy tales and childrens stories where people asked an owl for advice or help. This owl is obviously Hermione, for her feathers around the neck fall in a way reminisce of her long 'frizzy' brown hair.
Fred and George: I can think of two animagi forms that would fit these two, so I'm going to say one of them is a fox, for being cunning and devious, and the other is a monkey, for loving a good laugh. The two are interchangable between the brothers, of course. Plus there are red haired monkeys.
That's all for now. I'll think up more later.

To me, Neville seems to be a lot like a collie. A big, fluffy collie like Lassie! heart Collies are very loyal creatures. And they're just as sweet as can be. These are Neville's best qualities. He is probably the loyalist person in the whole series. He stuck by people in the hardest of times and he was the main protector of Hogwarts in its dark age. To me, Neville will always have the animagi form of a collie.

Ooh, I love Hermione as an owl, the twins as monkeys, and Neville as a collie! exclaim The explanations for those are good, too. smile
I don't think Harry or Ron would be dogs, though I can't offer alternatives at the moment. Maybe I'll think of some later. 3nodding
Lily would be a lioness. There's the independence of a cat that doesn't want others to tell her what to do, but she wouldn't be a small, unobtrusive feline because her fiery appearance and personality make her stand out too much. Lily also has the fierce courage and protectiveness of a liones.

I see Fred and George as skunks. I'm sure the two of them would REALLY have fun with that. ^_^
