My mom is an excellent crocheter (crochetist?) But she's a blanket and scarf kinda gal. I got her some books for christmas that are small amigurumi patterns and I want to include a variety of yarns . What I'd like to know is what is a good gauge of yarn to buy for this type of project?

Gauge of yarn? Eh, well...I'd suggest something cheap to practice with or follow with some of the patterns in there if it says what to use. Personally I use a lot of Red Heart yarns. Not sure if that's the cheapest in the world but it's tightly spun and in my eyes works pretty well for first time making certain patterns.

A little late, but still pertinent for Mother's day or something -- look through the books and either get assorted weights that are common in the projects, or just worsted weight yarns because that's the most common weight that I've seen in ami patterns.
