I've never had a root canal, just my wisdom teeth pulled. The shots to the gums to numb them hurt worse then anything, but after that it was no problem. The weird cracking sound when they're pulling them out freaked me out at first, my dentist guy kinda laughed at me when he saw the look on my face, he said the sound is normal. I was sure at first the teeth would all come out in little pieces from the sound of it. If you wanna keep your teeth you have to ask ahead of time, I kept mine.
After it was over I only took the pain meds for the first day sort of just in case, but it really didn't hurt at all so I stopped and just kept taking my anti-biotics and kept them clean. You may wanna get some mouthwash for the first few days. And bring a baggy to stuff used gauze into on the way home, you'll probably have your mouth stuffed full of it to sop up blood and slobber, lots of slobber. My dad left me sitting in a grocery store parking lot for about 45 minutes afterward. I don't recommend that part. I needed to change the gauze in my mouth so bad but I had nothing to put the gunky ones in so I just had to sit there with a mouth full of wet lumpy cottony goo and try not to drool on myself.
The first day I pretty much lived on apple sauce and soups like vegetable and creamy potato, but didn't eat the solid bits. By the second day I could eat soft stuff like the soup veggies & noodles and bits of bread, I think by the third our fourth day I could eat pretty much like normal except for things I knew would be especially hard like cold carrot sticks and hard candy, that sorta thing.

I was fully sedated for mine, so I didn't have to hear them pulling my teeth out. soft food for the first couple days, don't use a straw, it can give you dry sockets. which hurts like hell.

I've never had a root canal, but let's just say I wasn't too lucky when it comes to wisdom teeth. They were NOT in the right position, and apparently were huge, so that made the recovery process worse than for a lot of people. I was awake during the operation, and though it was painless (I had enough painkillers to not feel a thing) I was tense during the whole thing since dentist drills make me nervous. And all the cracking and popping did not help at all to my comfort level.
The recovery, however, was a complete different thing. As soon as the painkillers started to wear off, I could FEEL the pain. My doctor had prescribed some different painkillers, but I hadn't bought them yet since I couldn't feel anything. I had my dad rush off to the pharmacy to get them, since it just kept getting worse and worse. I spent the whole first day eating ice cream and jello. After that it was all soft foods for the next 3 days, until it didn't hurt as much to chew. By day 5 I was all good again.
Washing your teeth can be tricky, specially if you had to get some stitches for it to close properly. Be sure to ask your doctor for some spray that will help you keep that area clean and bacteria-free. If you use mouthwash, look for one that doesn't have alcohol, that could be painful. My doctor also told me that sleeping propped up onto a few pillows can help prevent infections, too, since it keeps a lot of the saliva you're bound to produce away from that area.
Good luck! And stock up on ice cream! mrgreen
