i am the only girl trumpet player in my school and it makes me sad. i have a friend, hee-jun who is the only guy flute player in my school and probably the only one in highschool i've ever seen.
for some reason certain instruments are masculine or feminine (omg i can't spell), this is part of the reason that girls have such a hard time making it as rock n' rollers unless they're hot.
discuss and think about it and whatnot. i'm really tired and can't write good anymore. (it's 1am where i am)

YESSS. modness.
i'm kind of friends with the only girl trumpet player in our high school band, but she hasn't said anything about sexism. of course, she isn't exactly the deepest girl i know.
i saw a thread in the music forum the other day about female guitar players, arguing that, besides the riot grrrl bands, there are very few good ones. it was kind of pathetic, because no one could really think of any contradictions to this (including myself, as i am stuck in the riot grrrl era).

yeah it totally sucks. but since riot grrl is a punk thing it's kinda like supposed to sound crappy anyway. i was trying to look up some really awesome female guitar players online and i came across this one lady who goes by the name "the great kat" and she is so freakin amazing. omg. she plays the hardest classical concertos on her guitar. it's fabulous. vivaldi! frickin rossini man! it's so gooood.

classical concertos on guitar? i might have to hear this. is she in a band or solo?

i don't really know if jo would be considered really all that good judging just from what i've heard from le tigre. all of the guitar parts are basically just power chords, pretty simple even for a beginner.
and yes, the great kat is solo. it's so cool to hear a metal version of william tell overture.

linkage?

Well, as a guitar player, I can concur with the statement that jo's guitar playing isn't all that intense. This serious lack of a female guitar playing role-model as suddenly afflicted me. I'll keep yall updated on my search.

I play fairly gender neutral instruments, the bass and the sax, but my brother plays the clarinet and got a lot of crap for it in high school, people would call him gay and yell s**t about him during band performances (I live in a really small red-neck hick town). My family is pretty conservative, except for me cool , so that was a huge insult for him. One of my best friends plays the flute and he is gay so you can just imagine how much crap he got for it in high school. He handled it well though and it just made him stronger, his just kick a** now... no one gives him crap anymore.

shiznazzled: will do.
i've never met a male flautist before. here, even the saxophone is a mostly male-dominated instrument - apparently its weight makes it a male instrument? one of my girl friends, an oboeist (sp?), is learning to play it. she says it's hard for her to play.
i almost chose to play the baritone, which is also pretty male-dominated, but the teacher bullied me into playing the clarinet instead. (i was in the sixth grade at the time.) i quit the year after that.

I can't say that I've seen much sexism in my school instrument-wise, though most of myband is dominated by girls anyways. I'd say the biggest thing is the rhythm section; I'm the only girl, but I know that other bands in my school have it switched around.
My teacher is a little instrument sexist, though. She doesn't let me bring my own intrument up on stage or let me carry it around...she always gets on of the guys in my class to get it. Apparently I can't get my own bass out...

Our school is anything but instrumental sexist. There's a good friend of mine who plays the flute and is a guy and there used to be 2 girls who played the trumpet before they both graduated.
And there are quite a few girls who play the saxophone and french horn. And girls who play the drums.
So... yeah.

I played the flute in the school band until I quit in grade 6. I can remember there was only one male flute player, and there were quite a few of us all together. I know kids use to pick on him for it, but I didn't know it was that bad that he actually quit band all together after less than a year. I think it was just the flute that had a gender specific steriotype to it. It seemed like everything else was unisexed.

the best floutists i've ever met have been men. and i know plenty of girls who have at least attempted to pick up the guitar.
i've always thought gender assigned instruments was dumb, but it's more unheard of for a guy to cross these boundaries than it is for a girl. that is, girls who play low brass are more common than boys who play flute. either way it's still dumb and i love playing my unisex instruments.
