The form of a kuniku sat atop a dune of snow near the docks, watching the early morning sunrise. The land of Hokkaido was as usual covered in snow, but the rays of sunlight that did make it through the clouds overhead turned the white landscape to a soft peach color at this time. Several snowflakes drifted down from the mostly cloudy sky, but the feeling wasn't something uncomfortable to someone who had grown up there. Sazanami let out a soft yawn, her tail swishing lightly as she gazed about the area.
Nothing.
...typical. Humans usually didn't come out early in the morning since the temperature was still very low, but Saza generally awoke with the coming of dawn to patrol, seeing to it that no Oni tried to attack any especially early risers. Today she hoped would be another peaceful one, but the owners of the boats that went back and forth between Honshu and Hokkaido were likely to start up and run their businesses for the day and that could mean a visitor, be it another Kuniku or even an Oni.

Ever since returning to the mountains he called home, Masao had been content. He had followed his desires and wandered all across Honshu, visited Shikoku and met many Kuniku who would always be dear to his heart, but he had always known that one day he would return to Hokkaido. Now the male spent his days in the high, cold mountains, keeping the Oni away from his beloved little village of Hitou. He rarely saw another these days, his days spent in contemplative solitude as he waded through snow drifts and marched with his unerring sense of direction across the mountains.
But today he had stepped down from the high peaks to trek down to the harbor. The air was still chilly, but the days were growing slightly longer. Hokkaido’s summer had nearly arrived. It didn’t mean an end to the snow, but some warmer days and a bit of sun to brighten the world of white. It also meant the return of Sorano. The blue bird had been Masao’s constant companion during his travelling years, and it had been a sad day when Masao had realized they would have to part. The little bird was not built to survive the long, cold winters of Hokkaido.
But now with the warmer weather, the little bird could fly over, or catch a ride on a boat, to rejoin his friend.
As Masao approached the village and its harbor, moving steadily across the dunes of snow, he spotted a figure ahead. It didn’t sop his progress; he simply gave a soft smile and prepared to meet whoever it was head on. Be Kuniku or Oni.
Of course it was soon revealed to be a Kuniku and the relaxed Masao simply walked right up beside her and sat himself down, gaze watching out to sea.
"Good morning." He said politedly, voice level and calm, holding a deep inner confidence as did every line of his body.

"Hello." Saza greeted Masao with ease and a slight smile, although in her mind she had jumped a foot off of the ground from his unexpected appearance. Despite her usually blank exterior she was actually quite emotional. She immediatley took note of the older male's confident posture, but decided against taking it for arrogance. Her tail curled neatly around her paws, the only physical display of her surprise. "I don't think we've met before." Saza turned her head to get a better look at Masao as she spoke. She had been in Hokkaido all her life and didn't believe they'd ever crossed paths until now.
Her patrols usually kept her away from the moutains toward the center of Hokkaido, leaving her to check up on the fishing villages close to the water which might explain why she had never seen Masao. She didn't ignore the mountains and the isolated people there, but felt that it would be best to protect the place where a majority of humans lived. On occassion she would travel to the ice caves on the mountain sides and try to drive out the few oni that she did encounter there.
