Riley had auditioned for this small part in a commercial, but had been extremely surprised when they invited her to be in it. They had asked at the beginning how well known she was (As their previous commercials had all involved famous actors, such as Mr. B, Bill Shaftner and several others) and when they had contacted her to offer the part, they had said they decided to go for a more 'everyman' approach for their next couple ads.
Hence, she was now doing some of the most ridiculous dances in front of a big white backdrop. There were four of them total. Herself, another girl (who she recognized as a fellow competitor in Stars and Starlets) and two other males, both of which she guessed were also up and coming dancers. So much for the "everyman" element.
They each had been given 5 dances to perform, hers were the Macarena, River dance, a belly dance, the Electric Slide and some dance by Sheniqua. It was simple math to know that at 5 dances each, it'd make one heck of a long commercial, so she was relieved when the four dancers were told they'd each have their own commercial.
She was dressed in a simple outfit, her top was a black bikini (because her stomach just had to be visible) and her lower outfit was a very low-cut pair of dark skinny-leg jeans. She had several pieces of dangly jewelry around her neck and hanging from her ears.
Three of the dances she had been able to do quickly and with few second takes. After all, who didn't know the Macarena? And River dance and the Electric slide were very much just 'step' dances and she had learned them easily enough while the first boy had been shooting his. After that, she did a belly dance.
She watched herself move on the playback with the director.
"You've got the stomach rolling down pat, but I think you could get your arms to be a little more fluid, don't you?"
"Sure, sure," she said, stepping back onto the backdrop. Her long hair had been let down and a single small ear bud was tucked into her ear and hidden by the black strands of hair around her shoulders. It ran down her back to a small MP3 player, which she hit play on and music started to play into her ear. Upbeat, Indian music played and she started to sway her hips and her arms snaked in front of her. She swayed back and forth and let the music move her. Riley closed her eyes briefly, then opened them, smiling to the camera.
"Cut!" the director yelled. "Good, good, I think that'll work well. Let's move onto the last dance, then."
Riley nodded and pushed her hair back with her hand as a team came over to fix her makeup and hair.
The final dance, one that mimicked one of the Latina singers, Sheniqua was going to be the longest part of the commercial, the director explained.
He had made her take off her MP3 player, as she would have to spin around, so this time, she was going to have to dance without music. She'd done it before, but it was never quite the same. She imagined the song playing in her head, as she clasped her arms over her head, circling her hips back and forth and bringing her arms in circles around her body.
Her favorite part of the dance, though, was when she wind milled her arms around her on either side and then turned a compete circle, with her hands on her hips all while staying in the marked spot and shaking her hips.
Although it took several takes, the director was finally pleased with her final try. As she walked out of the taping area, another tech motioned her over to his computer screen. He showed her a playback, with pre-prepared footage of the dancing characters. Next to her Macarena a human-looking CGed person danced, then a dwarf with the river dance and so on. She couldn't help but laugh a little as she saw what they did.
Someone else had done a voice over, talking about how much they loved the dances, but of course, her shaking her butt for the Sheniqua dance took up most of the time, as the voice over said that her favorite person to play was the Troll.
Riley wondered how weird it'd be to see herself on TV for the next couple months now as she pulled back her hair and sat down, drinking a bottle of water as she watched the last two start filming theirs.
