Hello.
I watching a bass tutorial video on Youtube and I was reading through the comments. The bass player in the video had his instrument tuned to B
I was reading through the comments on the video and someone was saying your not supposed to detune a bass or any other stringed instruments into B;there are 5 and 7 strings for that.
He also said that the purpose of the tuning knobs on a stringed instrument is to teach beginners to be in "tune" or Standard E.
Can anyone of you who are well-versed in music theory confirm this?
I say it's total BS.

If he honestly thinks that the only reason tuners are there is to teach beginners how to be in tune, then he's insane.

Haha classic. Tuners are there to tune the damn thing. Would be good fun to watch that guy play a bass that can't be tuned. And for the drop B thing, you can tune a bass or anything to whatever note you want it, hell it doesn't even have to be tuned to 440Hz if you don't want to. That guy is talking crap.

You can tune it down but you'll likely want thicker strings to get the intonation closer.
Also, tuning a guitar/bass down that far will require some level of resetting the intonation. I think I know where this guy is coming from when he says you "can't" maybe meaning that you can't *just* tune it down but you also have to set intonation and get heavier strings.
And of course, tuning knobs are there for everybody, not just beginners. That comment is BS...
my $0.02...
