He would of protested, that could be seen in his slightly tense position and less than happy glint that sparked and faded quickly in his single eye. She had been far to kind to him than he wanted or expected, yet at the same time he could not bring himself to argue with her. She was an alpha, after all, and he was supposed to listen, even if he didn't like to view himself much younger than others.
Instead of retorting, he changed subject before he dug his maw into the tender flesh of the doe that they had brought down together.
"S'at th' other border, mate?" He questioned right before tearing a fresh strip of meat and wolfing it down hastily. His grumbling stomach was thankful and soon quieted as he ate.

"A couple of... well I call them the Shadow pack. Their mostly all dark colors and hunt at night. Their not too friendly, but they don't mark borders. It's like they invite you to come closer before they rob you blind. Their the most important to watch because they steal my prey sometimes and they would attack you. I mark a border there, as strongly as I can. That way no one crosses if they pay attention enough. I don't like them, at all. There should always be borders..."
Thinking about how they broke laws made her think about her past. She sighed, remembering all the humans she's killed in revenge for the death of her pack. Benita and Verdauga still had not given details or swapped murder stories for which she was sort of glad. It was such a gloomy topic after all. Killing humans in the East was against the law. Most Easterners loved the gifts humans lavished them with. Benita hated it, hated all humans for what they had done to her family.
"Smell wise... I think they accept gifts from humans. They sort of smell like humans." She told him.

"M'ould ma's pack was like that'n." He mentioned quietly, but more to himself than to the alpha that had taken him in. His had been a roving pack of thieving, looting, murdering vagabonds that held no particular territory and did not mark themselves. Instead, they floated wherever they pleased and did as they wished.
He shuddered slightly and his dark, brown fur bristled. He was obviously unsettled, but said nothing more on the particular subject.
"Ah'll a'ways pay p'ticular attention 'ere, thass fer sure." He spoke after a lapse of silence and nodded to Benita, with a grim expression plastered to his features.

"Don't have to stay with me if they worry you." She said, understanding the grim expression. She sighed, she didn't want to make him run away. She really wanted him to join her pack. It wasn't her choice though, it was his. She was just letting him know. "Once I gain a pack large enough I'll drive them away. I don't want them to harm my future pack." She usually wouldn't drive a pack off it's own territory like that, it was a battle for sure. She tried to avoid battle, the safety of her pack was top priority. They were a threat to her pack though, more of a danger than their other neighbors. Someday maybe...for now it was just her and him.

"Nonsense, mate, ah' wou'dn't let a sour lot like that'n drive me 'way from 'ere." He replied, his expression softening as he did so. "Jest got 't keep an eye on 'em, s'all. Ah'll do wot ah c'n t' 'elp ye." He offered her what he hoped came off as an optimistic look, then turned his gaze to the borders that separated them from the shadow loving, unfriendly neighbors.
"Y'c'n count me in, Capt'n."

Benita smiled in amusement. "I've been called many things, captain is a first for me." His optimistic look was catching. "Thanks for the advice." She nodded, returning to her meal. Why did humans cook their food? In her point of view nothing was better or healthier than a fresh kill.

Verdauga had eaten his fill of the nourishing flesh that their doe had offered. He couldn't stand another bite, he was so full! He sat back on his haunches and washed his tongue over his maw, clearing away blood that had accumulated while he ate.
"Allus a first time fer everythin,' mate." He chuckled softly and turned his one eyed gaze to his paw, which scratched softly at the earth with his extended claws.

Benita finished as well, licking her chops. She scratched an itch, one of the few things she couldn't do gracefully. Finally she regained her composure and turned toward their last border. "Shall we? This is the last thing we'll have to do for the day." She encouraged, walking toward the place. The bamboo forest became gradually thicker and darker as it blocked out the sunlight. A clearing in the bamboo smelled very thickly of Benita. A trace of human scent wafted to them on the breeze. She renewed the scent markings, she was making it clear no one was welcome to cross here.

He took in the scents that surrounded them in this final border. Benita's was strong, a formidable warning to those on the other side, but theirs was faint and almost nonexistent. At least with the exception of the faint human scent on the air.
He had little to do with humans and little experience. Other than when they would make a point to try and raid human parties, with his parents. Travelers were often targets, but they were few and far between where he had lived.
His eye studied the terrain and the thickness and the slope of the mountain. He would be certain not to forget it.
"Ah, ah'c'n smell it, th' humans."

"You remember the human who came here earlier giving me an offering of lamb? He comes every few days but always at the same time. If you ever smell human at any other time then it's probably these guys trespassing." She huffed at the thought, glaring into the darkness.
Finally she relaxed and sighed, glad the border patrol was over. "Alright, we're done for the day. Let's go back to the den..." Reluctantly she turned and began walking away. "Welcome to the pack, Verdauga." She smiled over at him.

"Yess'm." He replied quietly as he peered into the darkness, then quickly about faced to join her in heading back towards the den of Benita's territory. There was a genuine smile on his maw and he felt content for the first time in ages, though he still couldn't help but to worry about the particular female that had saved him...
"Thankee, marm. 'Happy to be 'ere, Capt'n."
