One of my friends has introduced me to an incredible site called Better World Books. It's a fantastic company that sells books online, sometimes at very, very cheap prices, and the best part is that every purchase helps a literacy program somewhere in the world. There's plenty of information on the actual page, but one of the biggest ways they've influenced me is by making it easy for me to donate books to those who truly need them.

Just today, I packed two boxes, ten books each, and printed off the necessary slips to put in and on the boxes. Voila! Shipping is already payed by the company, and I know that my books might be bought by someone perusing the site, or may even help a child learn to read.

However, they do have some standards, and some of my books weren't accepted as donations. I'm curious to see if there are any other charities like this online where books are greatly needed.

~ Do you know any great book charities?
~ If you don't, where do you donate your books? Are they local?

Every year my libray does a mitten and book tree for children. All the donations are used locally.

Many of the popular Harry Potter Wizard Wrock bands donate their earnings to Terminus, which is a charity that donates books to poor children in hopes of spreading the number of literate people and a love of reading.

Every year at exam times (right now), my school collects used text books from students for the same purpose you're talking about: selling them and using the money to buy books for international literacy.

I'm not sure of any online programs that would take your unaccepted books, but consider donating them to a homeless shelter. I work at one in my town, and many homeless families have children who don't have access to books of their own.

I've found a place that will take anything that my friends don't want. I've actually been able to give a few as Christmas gifts, which is nice. n.n
