My church's youth group leader has been on vacations for about two weeks now. Our pastor and one of the deacons are the ones who are "filling the void." However, I'm sure that one of my friends and me could do well leading the youth group. I've done the meditation there once, but not leading the meetings at whole.
I believe that a passion for God and a passion for the youth are extremely important in such a ministry. A genuine interest in them can be really helpful. And my friend and I have a certain advantage over my pastor, the deacon, and our usual youth group leader: we are closer to the age of the group, so they can feel more identified with us.
It's not that we're planning to take over (... hmmm... although it would be neat! twisted Nah, just kidding), but I think that we both would love having a more active participation there through leading the group every once in a while.
