There's 2 girls sitting near where I am and they're working on math homework together. I was listening to them debate one and they settled on the wrong answer and its driving me nuts. One was getting close to the right track but the other one who is completely wrong talked her out of it. I kinda want to correct them but I'm not the type who can jump into a strangers conversation, especially to tell them they're wrong about something I was ever asked my opinion on.

The problem. Because I feel the urge to explain it to someone gonk Something about what are the chances of rolling a seven when you've got 2 6 sided dice.

The answer 3/21
There's 21 possible combinations of numbers with 2 6 sided dice. 3 of them equal 7.

Dice 1 rolls - Dice 2 rolls
1 - 1
1 - 2
1 - 3
1 - 4
1 - 5
1 - 6 =7

2 - 2
2 - 3
2 - 4
2 - 5 =7
2 - 6

3 - 3
3 - 4 =7
3 - 5
3 - 6

4 - 4
4 - 5
4 - 6

5 - 5
5 - 6

6 - 6

What they did- The first girl saw 3+4 and 1+6 so she figured there was 2 possible combos (she forgot 2+5). Then she decided that it was 2 out of 6 because the dice each have 6 sides. Wrong but a bit closer then the second girl. The second girl decided that since your only throwing the dice once you only had one chance of rolling a seven and since there's six sides to each dice it must be 1 out of 6 (But the odds would actually just multipily by 3 for each roll -2 rolls would be 6/21, 3 rolls would be 9/21, ect). When they were trying to explain their answers to each other the more wrong of the two got argumentative so the other one just caved. sweatdrop

I totally want to correct them, but I don't want to be a pushy know it all who butts in where I was never asked to be. xp Plus if I got it wrong too I'd be really embarrased xd
