eek A friend of mine and I have landed the job of stage managers in our community's production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow!!! I'm incredibly excited, but aside from puttering around, helping with props and scenery backstage...I'm not very experienced. Add onto that that this is my comanager's second play in his entire lifetime...yes I need advice/encouragement...I'd even settle for some finger-pointing and giggling redface

Without hanging out with them and truly getting to know them, you won't understand them and tey won't respect you. You need them to respect you enough to be able to get them to focus. You need to know them so you can designate a time for jokes and a time for work. For example, one day at rehersal, we techies were contemplating how many licks it does take to get to the center of a tootsie pop. The night of the show, the stagemanager brought in tootsie pops for all of us so we could try it. I think the final count was like 2000 some.

Stage Managing is fun biggrin
Remember, do NOT let them get away with stuff, they will walk all over you if you do. Good stage managers are known for being bitches to work for, but they get the job done and the show runs thats what counts.
What I SM, I don't care what you do before run after run, in fact i have lots of fun with the crew, but when we're in run I require blacks, no talking, and complete attention. I don't want to see or here the crew because it ruins the effect. With the cast I'm pretty much just as strict. Basic rules, be on time and don't screw around. Actors and techies can get seriously hurt if they don't listen to the SM, so you have to make sure they're listening to you.

Giacomo Casanova if people hate you your doing a good job sometimes If they are mad at you for telling them to stay on task then yes you are. if they are mad at you cause you are an @$$ in general, then it has nothing to do with your skills. This was not ment to imply that you are considered anything by anyone, I'm just saying.

Do not put up with crap. Our SM calls us her bitches and has on several occasion smacked me on the butt. Not a big deal, becasue we're friends but.... you know. Just remember- some actors can be total idiots and it's you're job to make sure they're not. Be strong and you'll be fine.

Stage managing is a lot of work. But it's also a lot of fun. I stage managed a straight show my freshman year...And then our competition one act musical (42nd Street) this year. I definitely think that the competition show was a lot harder to do. But..I had fun both times. Just..Be strict. And make sure people know that you don't put up with any crap. But have with it at the same time.

I think it's also important to be confident...as a stagehand, I want to get the vibe from my SM that they know what the hell's going on and what they're doing. Don't doubt yourself, because your team can sense it. That's probably the first step to respect. 3nodding
