I recently decided to try my hand at creating a steampunk ensemble. I know what I want, and decided that since I cannot sew without sewing myself into a garment (Ow.) that I would buy historical clothing and work to steampunk it from there. Most of the pieces I've had no trouble finding some historical reproduction clothing similar to what I had in mind or I already had something suitable, but the skirt is giving me grief. I wanted to find a Victorianesque skirt with some body to it, much like the top layer of this skirt piece. but I'd like it to be less black, and I simply haven't had any luck finding something similar. :< I've searched for kirtle skirts but to no avail. Does anyone have some advice to help my search?

So what you can do is find a regular fluted skirt and add some ribbon pieces to the inside and tie the skirt up like that. Just stitch the ribbon to the inside on the hem and another piece on the waist where you want the skirt to "hike up".

Thats a simple skirt to make... if you keep sewing your self i suggest you slow down when sewing. ok the way to make a skirt like that hick up is simple, you sew long pockets of fabric on the inside of of your skirt and insert a cord sew the bottom closed attaching the cord. than you would pull the cord to git it to hike up. this is a link to a petticoat type skirt but you could easily modify it to saute you.

Could you by any chance show the rest of the ensemble you planned? It'd be easier to match up a working skirt if you did so (although the other suggestions were great and you could probably go with those).

In addition to what other people have said, I'd suggest looking at a second-hand or thrift store - sometimes you'll find some amazing finds, and the price is right, too. ^_^
This may not work for you if you're wanting to go with a lot of historical accuracy, but nonetheless sometimes you'd be surprised with what you can find. smile (I prefer to stretch historical accuracy, admittedly.)
