So I'm thinking about joining the Navy. The plan is to join with my friend
(even though I'm pretty sure they will split us up almost instantly),
because it's always nice to have someone jump off the bridge with you,
right? Currently I'm working on cutting a little weight, and I should be
ready to go in a month or so.

Trouble is...

No offense intended to any of you who are/know recruiters, but mine
seems to be trying to sweet talk me into the Navy. I'm interested in
CTI's, and asked him if I would have to know a language or be fluent in
one in order to qualify. He paused and said "You don't have to know the
language, so much as understand one."

What does that even mean? talk2hand

So now I'm considering taking a class to learn a language, but that is
probably going to mean college (and I was hoping to have some of my
college paid for)...I find myself in a catch 22.

If anyone could shed some light on this situation it would be greatly
appreciated. Is it required that I already know the language that I'm
interested in interpreting? I'm also open to suggestions on other jobs I
may enjoy in place of this one.

if your interested in being a crypto you have to take the dlab(defense language aptitude battery) test. it determines if you have the ability to understand and interpret languages. i am not sure exactly what the test consists of since i am not a crypto. and no you are not required to know the language they will teach you

Thank you! That's really, very helpful. Once you provided me with the
DLAB acronym I was able to go onto About.com and find out more about
it. It sounds pretty straight forward. I just need to brush up on grammar
a little, because I sometimes confuse the 'technical words' for parts of
speech.

It sounds like as long as I keep a cool head in the portion of the test that
is aural, I'll be fine. The important thing is I don't have to spend money
on my military career! Exciting!

Sorry I didnt catch this post sooner. Good call on his behalf. And I think your recruiter was just saying, if they gave you a test on the language, you could understand and pass is all. I am an IT, so I am not on the same field in that respect, though IT's and CT's work the same grounds at times.

They're most interested in specific languages like Chinese, Russian, and some Middle Eastern languages, so think about what language you want to learn before you invest in it.

Just want to say good luck! CT is wide open for advancement, so that's a great choice!
