Well the movie made an effort to give it a classical feel, which I didn't necessarily dislike, but it was far from how I imagine the actual timeline. Snicket has been very careful not to actually give a distinctive timeframe, but from references he's made I gather that it actually takes place in the present, or recently, like the 90s. They reference people like Martin Luther King Jr and Richard Wright, who both lived in the mid 1900s.


There are a lot of anachronisms in the books. Count Olaf seems to get away with much more high-tech stuff. Personally I think the books have just a *touch* of fantasy to them and are set in an alternate universe.
