I am just curious as to how some of you would go about making a ranger for a campaign?

I never actually been one but I would probably make it a two weapon fighter and put everything I got into making it the perfect hunter. track, max ranks in survival, scent, lowlight or dark vision, and lots of other stuff I would need to boost perception skills like spot and listen

Half elf ranger....
Favored enemy: Orc (Giants are fun to theme as well)
Weapon Style: Archery
PrC: Seeker of the Misty Isle Elven Ranger Variant Levels
Gives a lot of room for roleplay material and lets you have a very respectable face of the party who isn't against or for good nor evil.

I would make him sort of an assassin, big F***'in cross bow, trap skills, good at running away, super accuracy, well equipped for any situation, self sufficient

My current campaign is lvl 9, so that's how I plan characters. Neutral Good Male Winged Wood-Elf
Weapon Style: Archery Favoured Enemies: Evil Outsiders, Magical Beasts
Weapons: Mighty Composite LongBow(+3), Two-Bladed Sword
PrC: Arcane Archer(until I find something better) after about level 10 or so
Feats: Exotic Weapon Proficiency(Two-Bladed Sword), Point Blank Shot, Far Shot, Improved Critical(Two-Bladed Sword)

Archery style with the Horizon Walker PrC is my favourite. Combined with the Quick trait and the appropriate magical items, you get a character who may drop quickly, but is almost impossible to actually catch.

i still go for stealth skills and nature/underground survival skills. either weapon style works for me, i don't care. probably twin-weapons so i can use kukri. i do only siege or agent-work, i suck at combat. xp

i currently play an ex serial killer turned hunter of undead. he's cool. doing the two weapon path, covered him in every bladed weapon i could logically fit on his body. negotiated a weakened wyrmling brass dragon for his companion, and my DM and i built a Prc that will slowly turn him pseudonatural. fun.

Put simply, I'd build it like this:
The Ranger's ability specialties are Dex, Strength, and Wisdom. Therefore, you'd choose a race that amplifies these three abilities. Elves, for instance, make good rangers, since they get a +2 to Dex and Wis when you first create one. Half-Orcs, while rather brutish for my taste, also make good rangers, along with either race of Shifter. It all depends on how you're going to fight. If you're going for the up-close "I'ma gonna kick your a**" combat, I'd pick either the Half-Orc or the Longtooth Shifter. For the long range "BOOM HEAD SHOT" combat, go with an Elf or the Razorclaw Shifter.
After that, its a matter of how you build your stats, given if it is V4.

For me, the best ranger I ever made was for an evil campaign (lv15) that was a Ranger 11/Disciple of Dispater 4. Currently I'm rebuilding him for that tarrasque challenge as a Ranger 11/Disciple of Dispater 8, two-weapon style with elven thinblade, and lightblade. I perfer a Wood elf or Wild elf for my race of choice, bonuses to either dexerity or strength, depending on your weapon preference, and a penalty to int the least important stat for a ranger (in my opinion). A good second choice would be Catfolk that can use the Catfolk pounce. I love the Disciple of Dispater PrC because of a couple of the powers they get, especially around lvl 8 of the class. The only thing is that the weapons they use HAVE to be iron/steel. Book of Vile Deeds Iron Power (Ex): When using an iron or steel weapon, a 4th-level disciple of Dispater gains a +1 insight bonus on attack and damage rolls. Furthermore, his threat range is doubled as if he were using a keen weapon. At 8th level, the insight bonus improves to +2, and the threat range triples. This ability does not stack with the keen weapon quality, but it does stack with the Improved Critical feat. Both of the weapons (elven thin/lightblade) have a 18-20 threat range. Improved Critical makes the threat range 15-20. So the way how I calculated it, the first power would lower it to 12-20, and the second power gets it to 9-20.
