Well, it is almost time for concert band to start. WEll symphonic band. My main instrument is oboe, and i play that in my church band. I am pretty good at it, not trying to brag. Anyway, at my school my band director that there are 3 oboes (including me) and my band director has told me that I should try to take up bassoon. 3 seems sort of like a number that is a little much. So should I take up bassoon or just stick with oboe?

Bassoon is AWESOME and can be very useful for low sections. I'd say go for it, you're already used to the double reed which is probably a huge advantage. Unless you really really don't want to switch, I'd suggest at least trying it. Learning a new instrument is fun, even if it doesn't turn out to be all that great.

Well If your BD is anything like mine then that's a good thing.

My BD only suggests that someone take up a new instrument if they either really suck at thier original or you're so good at your original instrument that he/she thinks you're capable of taking on another instrument

By what you say it's the better of the two so I say go for it. Cause then it broadens your horizons in the future. If you don't like the Bassoon then you can always go back to oboe but someone's gonna have to play the bassoon and I think he'd rather have you of all people because you have experiance with the double reed and wouldn't have to start all over with the embouchure and such.
