Your overall CL is the average of all your ring strengths. As you level them up the higher your over all CL gets. As your over all CL increases, you move into different categories, and the higher categories means lower drop rates by certain enemies.
How can you tell which category you are in vs. your enemy?
When you select a thing to fight a little status box opens in the top left of the screen. The back ground of the enemy tells you what category they are in (Easy, Medium, Hard, etc). If it is Red then the enemy is Very Difficult at your level, if it is blue or purple it is very easy. This is also easy to see by looking at the little + things on the side of the screen that show where enemies are in the direction you are headed. They change color to match your level.
Now, What to do about it...
Change your rings. If you want to orb farm for a while, change your rings to lower level rings. Then use the orbs you get to power up the ones you'll be wearing to fight the big enemies. Things like killing garlics will become hard again with these lower level rings, but at least your drop rate will increase again. Don't forget to team up for maximum drops!!

Or level just one ring up alot and leave the rest alone for awhile. That way the average stays down, but you can kill in one strike or heal alot.

You're Welcome!! I was getting tired of killing a bunch of things and never getting anything, and then I noticed that they were all purple. Well at least my crew members got a lot out of the deal.
Since I would much rather have orbs than extra Rock Armour or Meat rings, I salvaged them. It destroyed them (even the one that was soul bound) and in return I got an orb that I used to level up one of the rings I was keeping.

Perhaps I'll give that a try. I realised I missed a whole load of quests from Barton and now I need a flamingo feather and all I keep getting is paper.
