So I finally went to see a councelor about my depression and she suggested that I take anti-depressants. The problem is that I've only heard bad things about these meds and that over time they only make it worse. Has anyone ever taken any?? Or can anyone tell me anything about them

I've taken something similar to an anti-depressant. It was more like an anti-mood for me and it didn't have any side affects, it just did it's job and took away any extreme moods for me. Now I don't need to take them anymore. =)
Clinical depression is generally a chemical imbalance in the brain and is highly treatable, which means medications are usually the best way to go. If your counselor suggested you take some, I would try it out for a while! They are professional. If there's bad side affects, go back and see your counselor (or whoever prescribed the medication) and tell them that there were bad side affects and you can get your medication changed. there's lots of different ones because only one type won't work for everybody.

Fiaroka brings up a really good point. What works for one person won't necessarily work for someone else. And if you try a type of pill and it's not working, or it's got really strong side effects, then you need to go back to your doctor and ask to try something else.

When prescribed and taken properly, a lot of people find that medication helps them with their depression. I've had many close friends, as well as my current boyfriend, be on medication for depression and I think all of them found that it helped.

In the end though, it's a personal choice. If you don't want to try medication, then talk to your doctor or counsellor about other options available to you. And if you do decide to try medication, remember that it's important you find a brand or type that works for you. 3nodding
